i had the police wrongly list my bar to the papers as the one that had a stabbing - it made both newspapers on page one or 2 and the evening news. I got a page 10 retraction the next day and a 2 second woops on the news - killed the biz for 6 weeks.....

Seems like you'd have had grounds for a lawsuit. Their mistake, they should pay for it, not you.

I think there are way too many lawsuits over stupid shit but I agree I would have pursued legal action over that one. That could have caused some major damage to her life career wise, family ect. I would sue not so much for the money but the public acknowledgment of their wrong doing instead of some little blurb retraction
