the m5 is honestly as roomy as an x5. i dont know why people think SUV's are roomier.. maybe the trunk? but ive seen some 4 doors sedans fit more people/cargo than SUV....
the x5 is probably a 5 seater? so is the m5.. the ONLY thing you might lose is a little trunk space, but then again i doubt it..
I had a x5 4.4I for 5 years. It was great until the final year when stupid electric things went wrong and cost me $$ a warranty expired after 4 years.
It the best sports utility in my opinion. However we have a Mazda CX9 Grand Touring right now as our family car and its great. Drives & equipped like a premium suv at nearly 1/2 the price.
When I owned a Porsche they would give me a cayenne as a loaner and I was not that impressed. BMW was a better car...

I had a 06 M5. Now I have a 08 M3.. and I like it MUCH better than the m5.
what year are you looking at? i just went through this whole endevor about two months ago.
I was going between an X5, Range Rover, GMC Yukon and Escalade. IMO the MBenz is complete shit unless you are looking at one that is about 1-2 years old tops.
I drove the X5 and didnt like it. Option wise, was completely lacking what the Yukon/Esclada had and was $8k more. Plus its hard to do any aftermarket work to it, such as lift kit, off road stuff, etc. even rear entertainment package.
I looked at the Range Rover and since it wouldnt be my main car, I passed. Dont get me wrong, they are nice but not worth the $$ for a secondary car. I went to look at GMC brand, since I had a lot of friends with them and found a really sweet Z71 Tahoe that had more options than a Yukon. Caddy, IMO, you are just paying for the price.
If your open minded, check out the late model Yukon/Tahoes they are pretty nice and a LOT more room than the X5
