I developed a tool for engineers over a year ago and has been used a lot.

I ain't gonna say what it is but will show you some things I've learned. Engineering companies usually charge about $100 per hour for project managers and project engineers... at a minimum.

This tool has been hit on average 200 times per day over the past year. The reason I developed it because in my line of work it saved me about 2 hours of project time.

I recently put the site behind a u/p to obtain information and also stop some of the bots.

These are the emails and messages I get:

"I just tried to login into xxxx.com and I have a screen asking me to log in. I never did this before and don't understand why I need to now"

"i have done everything possible to try and login to your site and your site just doesn't work. I've been using your site and would like to know why I even have to create an account anyway!"

"why do I have to login now! can you please have your engineering department contact me asap so I can use the site."

etc. etc.

I got very, very few responses saying that they appreciate the free tool and it has saved them shitloads of time on their projects.

So here are my figures...

200 searches*48 weeks*5 days per week*$200 per search in savings is about...

9.6 million dollars saved in this fucking world.

This is the same mentality that surfers have when they have access to free porn...

Give them an inch they want the world... porn is no different as people are inherently selfish, rude and quite simply assholes!

I didn't even realize it till I got a HUGE influx of assholes in my inbox...

But... do you see the correlation between needy engineers and porn surfers today??

Ask yourself that question... i'm talking millions of dollars in one industry... the porn industry is losing billions by tubes.

I know most of you won't believe me but it is true. There would be billions of extra dollars if the tubes would... well ya know the answer to that.

I think giving away for free(to charge later)is one of the best marketing strategies. But it only works if your product is great.

What I did was take a tedious process of what was on paper in code books and make them searchable online in a matter of less then a second. It saves about 2 hours per project...

I know it is a good tool but am really blown away how SO many people can be such assholes. Like they deserve the tool because it is there...

Hank is right on... they need to pay for it. I would put it up as a paysite today except have a bigger plan for now...

I think the same rule applies to pretty much every industry. Most people want to be paid but not pay for anything.

So true... it's human nature "If you can get it for free why pay for it" and we are living that nightmare everyday with tubes etc!

I was running a huge free site and when I turned it pay I had so many pissed off emails... one guy said I love your site and I can't afford 29.95 a month... my reply well I can't afford 1k a month with it being a free site!!!!!

On topic then, Yes...the Internet is bullshit. Everything is supposed to
be free. But you have to make them see the value, then you could
actually start charging, and it's not to late to make business with
this....what is it called???

Anyhow, set up a new web site and start all over.
And let them pay.
