				Do peppers cause constipation?
Top Bucks Lilit is trying to tell me that peppers cause constipation. I've never heard of such a thing. Always the opposite. Peppers turn your ass into a waterfall. Anyone with constipation experience after eating a pepper?

				 | Usually relieves constipation. Now if you eat a bunch of hot pepper beef the meat might constipate you but not the hot peppers. however, I've never had my ass turn into a waterfall either. |

				 | Causes of Constipation In most cases where the stool is hard, constipation is due to dryness of mucus membranes. Should that happen, usually the mouth also becomes dry with increased thirst. Like frequency of bowel movement, causes also vary from person to person. One factor that makes a person constipated may not have similar effect of the other. Common causes are: * Frequent use of spicy food * Excessive use of foodstuff that tends to create dryness of mucus membranes * Insufficient fluid intake * Pregnancy (not everyone is affected) * Reduced physical activity * Continuous bed rest due to sickness * Intestinal obstruction * Medication for certain diseases * Over use of laxatives * Aging (in some persons) * Traveling * Habitual delay in attending the call to bowel movement * Use of narcotics (including smoking) Source: http://www.homeopathy.com.pk

In our initial conversation with Sly we were talking about habanero chili pepper which is a spice, I guess he forgot to mention that in his post So we're not talking about peppers in general.

				 | ding ding spicy is not peppers. Peppers are fruits. Peppers digest in your intestines therefore do not cause constipation, they actually add water to your intestines and make it easier *to go* like all fruits |

				 | I know you want to win the argument with Sly, however, Peppers are fruits, no matter what you say. And the human body digests fruits a certain way. We harvest buckets of habaneros every year and have been growing peppers for awhile, they are fruits dear. Cayenne pepper is used to STOP CONSTIPATION, peppers do not cause it LOL Cayenne has been researched and proven to increase peristalsis which aids in digestion. Even google says so ;) http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&s...q=f &oq=&aqi= First result: "natural remedy for constipation: cayenne peppers" Bottom line is fruits aid in adding moisture ot out intestines, peppers do it too as all fruits do. Which is why people get the shits after eating too many fruits, they bypass the stomach and digest in the intestines. ;) |

				 | Close. Peppers (bell peppers: green, red, yellow, etc) Belong to the Nightshade Family Bell pepper is one of the vegetables in the nightshade (Solanaceae) family, which includes eggplant, tomatoes and white potatoes. Quote:
A quick googling nets this... http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?t...dspice&dbid=50 A relatively small serving, according to several online articles, nets you about 5-7% of your daily fibre requirement. Not bad at all. Add in the rest of the benefits and peppers seem to be one of those wonder foods that we all need to eat more. I put them in as many dishes as I can... spagetti sauces, chili, chopped in salads, etc. If Sly did indeed mean peppers in general then his side of the argument would be the more valid. Because fibre trumps constipation. It is inarguable.

as are certain fruit or fruit-like varieties. Quote:
Unless one has a system that is sensitive to such foods, in which case they should probably avoid the entire food group (nightshades) altogether.

"Potatoes, tomatoes, sweet and hot peppers, eggplant, tomatillos, tamarios, pepinos, pimentos, paprika, cayenne, and Tabasco sauce are classified as nightshade foods. A particular group of substances in these foods, called alkaloids, can impact nerve-muscle function and digestive function in animals and humans, and may also be able to compromise joint function. Because the amount of alkaloids is very low in nightshade foods when compared with other nightshade plants, health problems from nightshade foods may only occur in individuals who are especially sensitive to these alkaloid substances. Since cooking only lowers alkaloid content of nightshade foods by about 40-50%, highly sensitive individuals may want to avoid this category of food altogether." So it appears the real answer is no, peppers for the most part do not cause constipation and in fact do much to preventing it. However, CAN they cause it in certain people? The answer to that would seem to be yes. So they're both right. Sly for the most part, and Lilit to the lesser degree in that there are exceptions.

				 | I have bushes full of habanero peppers in my yard right now. I promise, they won't constipate you! but yeah we dry them out, grind them up, and make spicy stuff with them too. You only need a little! drink lots of water with your hot peppers, and watch the salt because that is what will do you in. |
