depends on your definition of rock i guess. also keep in mind there is a lot more out there than the crap they repeat over and over again on the radio.you don't know you're wearing a leash if you sit by the peg all day.. -
My good friend, The Classic Rock Guru, insists there are but two "real" rock 'n roll bands left, if by 'real' you mean anyone who still has a semblance of integrity and views music as transformative art:
1. Pearl Jam
2. U2
and I nominate a third:
3. Counting Crows
(R.I.P. The Cranberries & The Wallflowers)

Alice in Chains...don't keep up with any other current bands at the moment that I could get away with calling a "real rock band" since I know how people here feel about 311, but caught the new AIC recently and was amazed...took me back to mid 90s goodness.Want to crush it in mainstream with Facebook ads? Since when is Rockstar defined as someone with integrity and sees music as a trans formative art. No one was talking about a rock STAR, sir. But rather, the art form itself. MUSIC, if you will, as transormative art. The problem is, most people today just think of 'music' as background noise, or instantly disposable. Insert ANY 'band' or artist that's changed your life and you'll know what I mean. Where, in short, are the artists of merit, who give a fuck, and who really 'matter'?

By current I meant a real rock and roll band that has achieved fame within the past 5 or 10 years.
With all of today's insanity, political chaos, wars, etc... you would think there would be a new rock band forming every fucking week!
It really seems like a lazy, anti-social, unmotivated, sedentary generation....Last edited by BFT3K; 11-14-2009, 10:27 PM.Comment

Lots of people singing about all those things, just because they don't talk about it via a musical genre that you relate to, doesn't mean the entire generation is too lazy to play music.By current I meant a real rock and roll band that has achieved fame within the past 5 or 10 years.

what fucking crack are you smoking? either change your musical tastes and follow the message where it takes you. or deal with people playing washed up regurgitated music, in a musical genre that just isn't that exciting anymore.
What exactly do you consider "rock n' roll" anyways?Comment

That band's not really made up of musicians from today's generation, but I guess you can try to slip them through as a new band.

As far as bands currently charting in the genre, Bon Jovi, Slayer, Foo Fighters, Muse, Alice in Chains (as mentioned), Pearl Jam (mentioned), AFI, Death Cab For Cutie, Cage The Elephant (who are really growing on me), Daughtry, Bob Dylan, Foreigner, Hollywood Undead, Green Day, Megadeth, the list goes on. Some old, some new, all moving significant product right now in November 2009.Comment

Cage the Elephant was slowing starting to grow on me for a short while, then my interest plateaued when I started hearing that no rest for the wicked song 8 times a fucking day, every day, everywhere i went. over and over and over. it's turned into worse elevator music than maroon 5...As far as bands currently charting in the genre, Bon Jovi, Slayer, Foo Fighters, Muse, Alice in Chains (as mentioned), Pearl Jam (mentioned), AFI, Death Cab For Cutie, Cage The Elephant (who are really growing on me), Daughtry, Bob Dylan, Foreigner, Hollywood Undead, Green Day, Megadeth, the list goes on. And Green Day, fuck, don't even get me started. Just mention ofthat fucking band makes my blood boil.
Aside from Slayer, that whole list is garbage.

I was really annoyed that earlier this year they were everywhere you turned, promoting their new album.
But then I heard "Last of the American Girls" - and then all was forgiven.
I know most people here see anything commercial as a complete sell-out and certainly not worthy of praise.
But that is a *great* - and I mean *A FUCKING GREAT* - pop record.

I think the OP means bands that created their bands since lets say 1980 to current. Pre 80 is way to old to be current, even if they remain current.Comment

Ain't easy these days, rock has become something that has to be "mainstream" and "acceptable", it's not the revolt that filled the air for decades anymore, it just translates into another artificial genre that is supposed to fill 3 minutes of air time with something dull and tasteless, that eventually forces someones subconscious mind to buy it.
You open a Rolling Stone magazine and even their editors do write mainly about older proven acts that still tour and release albums, since there's not that much to write about with the "current" bands, that are busy to fulfill their "record 5 shitty records till we keep you on MTV" contracts.
Times when certain strong movements (punk rock, new wave, thrash, grunge, trip hop, even nu-metal used to have its cult audience before it went hype etc.) got their chance and piece of the mass media pie seem to be over for well over a decade.Last edited by CarlosTheGaucho; 11-15-2009, 09:21 AM.Need hosting, cloud, CDN or solutions for your AI? it all depends on what you consider Rock and Roll as everything now is considered "alternative" but what is it "alternative" to.
There are plenty of bands that i can't stand that some people would call rock and roll. and by current if you mean still making albums, you most certainly can include the rolling stones as they still tour and still make albums. ac/dc would definately fit in that category. U2 would fit. Rock and roll is supposed to evolve. Green Day, Nickleback(they fucking suck) Filter, Aerosmith up until 4 days ago allegedly. Bon Jovi has a new album out on tour. If anything im gonna have to put the stones up there at
#1 stones
#2 U2 they only have 30 hits as opposed to the stones 50
#3 AC/DC
Here 1-2 comboLast edited by stoner529; 11-15-2009, 11:56 AM.Comment

I'm not endorsing that whole list of bands and it is certainly not a list of personal favorites over the years. I just think those are all bands most people would classify as rock, which are currently charting, right now, this month, not at some point in the distant past.Comment

It is somewhat ironic you list them since their uniquely awful combination of bland generic music and lack of talent combined with their insufferable self righteous and humorlessness was probably the death knell of the rock genre. Quite simply the worst band of all time.

If you really feel Pearl Jam is the worst band of all time, I recommend you listen to people like Nickelback and Creed, along with a shit load of others.
All bands are self righteous, all celebs, stars, etc are..to an extreme. I personally have ever seen humor in rock or any music.
For Pearl Jam to have no talent and such trash, they sure pack the house larger and better, than many major bands listed in this thread.
