List your Cable TV Pet Peeves

    Okay I'll start...

Amber alerts during premieres. I know and I feel bad, but I'll bet they aren't racing by my window with the kid in the car.

Beating to death one of my favorite movies like BEING JOHN MALKOVICH (Catherine Keener is 51 one by the way, can you believe that shit? I never thought she was the best in the looks department despite what a great actress she was but now I think she's smoking), until I hate it while never playing the ORIGINAL ROLLERBALL, DEATH RACE 2000 or even THE WARRIORS...

Playing three movies like BLACK HAWK DOWN, THIEF, ETC. on the same day at the same time and then the next day giving me nothing but HE'S JUST NOT THAT INTO YOU and SEX IN THE CITY over and over and over until my brain explodes as you collect my 200 bucks a month...

Using the same method as above as your line up. Believe me, the people watching HORTON HEARS A WHO, are not going to suddenly become a fan of TO LIVE AND DIE IN LA and start letting their kids watch it because you put in on just before or after. What don't you just put in on before or after DEBBIE DOES DALLAS? In the adult business you'd be arrested!

    Okay, your turn

I can't stand pre-caps and re-caps. Where right before the commercials start there is a "coming up" clip where they show you highlights from the show (I'm trying to watch the show, stop showing me what happens). Then when the commercials end you get a recap of what you just watched 5 minutes ago. I always try to fast forward the DVR right before the pre-cap and stop after the re-cap. Fucking annoying.
History will be kind to me for I intend to write it.

Who's into inventing a recorder that automatically knocks out the commercials when you're recording? I promise to take all the credit if one of you guys have the actual know how!

I have a VCR that purpoted to do this. It worked based upon the volume and changes in the video stream abruptly, so when shit changed color and got black it'd 'flag' it until the volumes returned to a semi-normal level.

It did not work all that well when trying to record Pop-Up Video.

Also forgot to add my gripe:

              Shitty support.

Ok, so I'm paying over $100/mo for crappy phone support and an average of 2 DVRs in a month? Why can't you just fire the damn incompetents or make sure the guys on the road don't beat the living fuck out of the equipment?

My DVR started flaking on the second tuner so I asked for a replacement. All 4 that the guy had on his truck were various levels of fucked. One wouldn't even power on.

don't forget fights between the cable companies and content providers that result in tons of stupid commercials saying everything the opposite side is saying is a lie.

Every fucking channel having their little logo feces or little animated ads in one or more of the corners on the screen. I know what fucking channel I'm watching.. I put it on .. I don't need a persistent reminder.

Channels I should get but don't.

Channels that should be HD but arent.

I hate those fucking things. Seems like they're getting bigger and bigger every month. Almost takes up the whole fucking corner now. Some channels like Bravo & TNT have them last like a minute into the show after getting back from the commercials...WTF!!

My cable company advertises FREE HDTV channels but they scramble them and you can only view them if you rent their $18 HD receiver but my TV has a built-in HD receiver

I can only get locals in HD because they are not allowed to scramble the local channels.

If I dvr a game I have to record a show or two after just in case it goes to overtime.

                            That sucks.

I like DirecTV's picture quality, channel lineup, HD selections, DVR and service. I only object to the price! For the Total Choice Plus HD package with a movie channels incl. HBO, Showtime, Starz, Encore (all except Cinemax) I am now paying $127.50 per month! Just for tv! And I have to pay an arm & a leg for telephone & DSL too. I am seriously considering taking Comcast up on their triple play offer and getting Comcast Cable, cable modem and phone for $99 month.

The change in volume from one channel to another. Or the change in volume between commercial and show.

I hate that non of them, cable or satellite offer ala carte service, as in I only want the channels my provider can offer in HD. I do not want the 300 or so channels that are only available in SD.

Inorder to get the 100 of so channels that they offer in HD I have to buy basic package which has no HD and then add on the digital package, which has no HD then I can get the HD package with as someone already mentioned an additional $18 a month for their box even though all my tv's have one built in.

kind of getting expensive for less service, Cablevision IO Silver with internet costing $162.96 a month and this includes TV Japan $24.95 (only 1 channel). I had IO Gold costing around $200 but never watched all those movie channels.

what sucks is they blacked out a bunch of channels do to some disputes, they are back now but they never give you a credit. Plus good luck waiting for the cable guy...they had me waiting on a Saturday all day....just to call me at 6pm telling me...we drove by your building but your super was not home to bring us to the main box. WTF

My biggest complaint: Not enough bandwidth.

                                      Same goes for Satellite TV.

Too many shows, especially late night, are too compressed and look too blotchy / murky. Even "HD" looks like shit on some channels. The worst are Space adventure shows like Star Trek Voyager or any show with Fog in the scenes. They are so over compressed that all you see are color-bands in space instead of lens flares, and blocky/choppy video noise. BAH! Time to watch blu ray.

I hate when my DVR misses the last like 5 minutes of a show or movie!!!! The things worthless if you don't know if the guy lives or dies at the end, or the world is saved or not, or etc etc!

Also, all the dumb infomercials about colon cleansing and the damn weight that oscillates in your hand and they show a guy holding it and I cant help but think its a dick in his hand that hes jerking ugh.

Not really a cable issue but more of an issue pertaining to certain specific shows. But you're 100% correct, I find that crap annoying as hell as well.

In fact, when it happens I pick up the remote and go channel surfing. I don't do "coming up". Like you said just get to the damn commercials and then continue the damn show, nevermind all the stupid previews at every station break.

In my area in winter, it snows alot. A whole lot. Schools close often. Quite often. And my local network channels? They all compete to be the source for school closings and other closings. They take the HD screen, and insert a giant frame around the picture which they jam down to 4:3 mode. They have a banner ad that rotates a few shitty local companies on the bottom left, they have a clock/temp below the channel logo on the bottom right, and in the bottom middle they flash various schools and events that are closed or cancelled. And they do this well into the EVENING. Yes, at 6pm you can learn that your childs pre-school was cancelled for that morning.

All the HD channels are compressed. ESPN, by contract, is the only one not compressed.

That is one of my biggest pet peeves with US local network channels. My local cable co. gets several US feeds, from Rochester NY, Chicago, Spokane, etc, and there is at least one channel in each locale that does this crap. Have these people not heard of watching the news?

The ones that run a news ticker across the top of your screen while you're trying to watch prime-time programming also really irk me to no end. Thank God Canadian stations haven't taken to pulling this shit. They do other little annoying things, but thankfully not that.

It's my opinion that tv has been trying to compete with the internet, and they havent figured out yet that it's a waste of time. I mean, look at msnbc, cnn, foxnews for example. They have giant portions of the screen at top and bottom being used for garbage you dont want or need. Do you need to see the dow jones every moment? No. Do you need to see the time in every time zone? No. Do you need to see the channel banner? No. Do you need AP news wire feeds DURING live news? No. They just SUCK at being TV anymore and they SUCK at pretending to give us more than whatever the talking head is saying. I didnt turn on the news to READ an AP wire, jackasses

Needs to be some back to basics happening in these boardrooms.

Try going to one of those cable news channels. Try zooming in with your cable box and/or tv remotes until you only see a person on screen, no text or data. Go ahead. You'll find yourself watching 3/4's of a persons head.
