    I CHALLENGE you to find a BETTER LAPTOP for under $2500

    I don't need a solid state drive or any other fancy nonsense, just a good solid rig for occasional gaming and compiling / everyday work.

    US$2300 - HP Pavilion DV7-3007TX laptop features a 17.3" screen, the new Intel Core i7 quad core 1.6GHz processor, 4GB RAM, 1000GB HDD, Blu-ray ROM/DVD burner combo, 1GB graphics, 17.3" screen, Bluetooth and the Windows 7 Home operating system.

    I might up the Ram to 6Gb or 8Gb, although I'm not convinced it's really necessary.

    Will run 64 bit Win 7 on it.

    Can anyone recommend anything better? (no MAC clowns pls, I want a proper machine for work with grown ups)

        I just picked this up for $900+

        ASUS
        * 16"
        * Intel Core 2 Duo P8700 Processor 2.53GHz
        * NVidia GeForce GT 220M Graphics with 1GB DDR2 VRAM
        * 4GB of DDR2 RAM, 2 slots, 4GB Max; DVD SuperMulti Drive
        * 320GB SATA Hard Drive (7200 RPM); 16-inch HD LCD Display
        * Windows Vista Home Premium (32 bit) Operating System

        Its free windows 7 upgrade..

        only thing yours has better is really the quad core and the 17" screen + bluray

        I can buy an external usb blu ray burner for couple hundred

        I dont think the little cpu upgrade and the 1" screen upgrade is worth the $1,500 difference..

        do you?

            wouldn't be worth the extra 1500 for me either. Asus makes good stuff

                  Honestly i shopped around for a while, and that ASUS was the best deal i found..

                  Take for example the toshiba ^^

                  I just dont think a small CPU upgrade + blueray + 2gbram is worth extra $1000

                  I can get blurary USB for $200, 2gb ram is $50, so technically you are paying extra $750 for cpu??

                  Asus makes good stuff.. if i were you idget the ASUS for <$1000 then upgrade it to 8gb ram, and grab the free windows 7 upgrade...how many times are you gonna burn a blue ray disc? heck just buy external one if you need it that bad..

                  Remember the ASUS already has 16" screen.. no big diff from 16-17 really.. you wont miss it

                                Damn, there's some good systems out there, thought I'd found the best deal.

                                Being in Australia you're a little restricted, but would happily ship a real bargain halfway round the world.

                                  Very nice Flow, am looking into them.

                                  I don't need a big screen / really portable system, it's mainly for home use and will be plugged into multiple monitors.

                                    Can anyone recommend anything better? (no MAC clowns pls, I want a proper machine for work with grown ups)
                                    I'm sorry, but where are the specs on this thing? Uhg, I will never understand this from people..

                                    1GB Graphics.... What the hell does that mean?

                                    Is it a $39 1GB SAPPHIRE 100274L Video Card.

                                    OR, a $2,300 1GB PNY VCQFX5500-PCIE-PB Video Card.

                                    Eh, nevermind. You go buy an HP and think you're getting a good deal.

                                      No, I'm going with the "Flow" option.

                                      Thanks

                                          I don't need a big screen / really portable system, it's mainly for home use and will be plugged into multiple monitors.
                                          Get a good desktop system and a netbook. You'll have one system that beats the crap out of any laptop, and one you can actually take along with you when you want to go somewhere.

                                              Remember the ASUS already has 16" screen.. no big diff from 16-17 really.. you wont miss it
                                              I think you bought a week or so too soon. I have been looking for a good laptop under $1000 that had dedicated video and DDR3. Who the hell needs Bluray on a laptop? Finally came across the new Toshiba Satellites and ended up getting the A505-S6992 for $899.99
