Are or were you a 'user'?

The reason I ask is cuz I used to think I had it too, plus a lotta my friends were diagnosed w/ it. A lotta times it stems form heavy drug/alcohol use. And using any of that just adds fuel to the fire. Once I got clean (13 months sober today! Woo hoo!), some of those things got better while others you have to work at or get a nice perscription from the doc.

You may be hooked emotionally and psychologically. You may have a physical dependence, too. But if you?re addicted to a drug, whether the drug is legal or illegal, you have a craving for it. You want to use it again. When you stop taking the drug, you may have unpleasant physical reactions.

Drug addiction involves compulsively seeking to use a substance, regardless of the potentially negative social, psychological and physical consequences. Certain drugs, such as narcotics and cocaine, are more physically addicting than some other drugs.

The range of drugs to which you can become addicted is wide. They include:

Cannabis compounds. Contained in marijuana and hashish.
Central nervous system depressants. Barbiturates and benzodiazepines. Benzodiazepines include tranquilizers such as diazepam (Valium), alprazolam (Xanax), oxazepam (Serax), lorazepam (Ativan), clonazepam (Klonopin) and chlordiazepoxide (Librium).
Central nervous system stimulants. Amphetamines and cocaine.
Designer drugs. Synthetic compounds such as Ecstasy, which has both amphetaminelike and hallucinogenic effects.
Hallucinogens. LSD and phencyclidine (PCP).
Inhalants. Glue, paint, solvents, nitrous oxide.
Opioids. Narcotic, painkilling drugs produced naturally from opium or made synthetically. They include heroin, morphine, codeine and methadone.
Breaking a drug addiction may involve support from your doctor, family, friends and others who have an addiction, as well as inpatient and outpatient treatment.

People and Doctors are way too quick to diagnose psyical and emotional dissorders.

Most of the time a swift kick in the ass is all that is needed.

BiPolar - You are just "moody" get over it and get back to work.

Depression - Get off your ass and get a job, if you did you wouldnt feel so down.

Stress - There is no such thing as stress. You are just lazy.

Social Anxiety Disorder - WTF? you are just shy.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome - If you got off your ass and got a job or a hobby, you wouldnt be so tired all of the time.

Fibromyalgia - If you would get off your lazy ass and get some exercise, your joints and muscles wouldnt be hurting.

Bahhh

Don't worry about it too much... I think the brain just has many ways of functioning -- and being "bipolar" is just one way to think... As long as you don't get caught in the pattern of bipolar thinking, you are cool... I'm not a psychologist, but who the fuck needs one of them -- ultimately you are in complete control of your own thoughts -- you have a unique identity and that is entirely your responsibility. I think some of the information posted is useful though -- you got to take care of your body... it's a very complicated sytem and requires fine tuning for optimal performance like any sophisticated machine.

Anyway I'm not doctor

It's very common.. 1 in 10 people have different levels of Bi-Polar. One of the other trait of the disorder is you tend ot gravitate towards others with the disorder. Mean.. you are attracted to people that have it. This would explaine why alot of your friends have been diagnosed with it. There is no cure for it, but it is very controlable.

You forgot some of the other symtoms.. I hightened need for or interest in sex. Shit.. all of us have it then!!! Bi-polars also tend to be VERY creative and artistic. They are also known to have a higher IQ then the avarage person. They also, in many cases have or have had substance abuse problems. It also runs in the family and gene pool. If you have it.. then you have a family member somewhere that has it also.

My brother has it.... It was wild at first till we figured out the situation.. Dont worry if you do have it... Nothing to lose sleep over. It is pretty damn easy to control.

The reality is most people are UNDERdiagnosed due to the HMOS.

in short: see a doctor.

I have been there, sometimes still go there, and the worse (or best) thing the doc can say is that you don't have it. Also, you don't have to be bipolar to be depressed.

Look, most of us are isolated all day. We have friends and stuff but most of the day we are left alone in our own heads. What is more, this is the kind of business where you can be living like a king one day and the next day you are in the gutter.

I am suprised that more webmasters don't have despression spells. For me it plays out in my sleep patterns. Right now it is 5:45 am where I am and I have been to bed but haven't slept. I'm not going back to bed cause I have a phone call to make at 9am and I know that if I go back to bed I won't wake up until 2pm at the earliest. Can't fall asleep but when I do I can't wake up.

So, call the doc and get it looked at.

Did anyone see the movie A Beautiful Mind?
In addition to being a great movie, the central character is bipolar.

Anyway, a member of my family was recently diagnosed as biploar. It's not something to be taken lightly, nor is it something easy to control. Bipolar people tend to stop taking their medicines because they miss the high.

if you are bi-polar, it's easy to treat usually. so don't be scared, just go to your family doctor and tell him you think you might be bi-polar. He'll send you to a psychiatrist for a consultation. If he diagnoses you are bi-polar you'll be put on meds, lithium most likely. It will work.

bi-polar is cut and dry, it is a real illness, that's why it responds so well to lithium.

good luck

Go see a professional and get diagnosed... there's no harm or shame in that! If you don't like what you hear, get a second opinion. Just remember that beyond medication some kind of therapy might also be a good idea. Usually, such problems aren't entirely biological.

I take Wellbutrin and I feel.... very well!

the sad thing with lithium is that it causes major weight gain. I worked in mental health and had a big case load with a few bipolar disorders. In woman it is much easier to detect. I could always tell when a woman was manic, she would cake on the makeup, wear big goddy earrings,, ect..

Yep... very true.. Also.. when you are on a high you feel great! Why do you need meds when you are feeing great? It requires ongoing therpy.. not just medication. It should not be taken lightly at all. It can be controled for certain, but it is not always easy.

Dont sweat it man.. Looks like you have a pretty good support group of GFY'ers here. lol

See your Doctor... When you are done with him.. see another one.

You might do better reading the book, as John Nash is actually schizophrenic, which is a different deal.

Bipolar: To me, this means when you're down, you stay submerged for a while. Like having your head in a bell jar, a la Sylvia Plath. When you're up, you do things like stay up for three days because you're really excited about whatever is on your mind. Keep in mind, this could involve external drugs but in lots and lots of cases doesn't. It can affect children who have never so much as touched caffeine. Going into a high phase or a low phase may be affected by your external environment and other people, but you're pretty alone in this jar thing, and you call your own shots from within that sealed environment.

Schizophrenic: Drop a sheet of acid after putting on a straight jacket and then have people look at you funny and generally try and fuck with your head. I think schizophrenia is more like just dropping the sheet without any of rest... but our society interprets unpredictable, schizophrenic behavior as dangerous and reacts very defensively. So these ultrasensitive open headed people with their senses aswirl end up catching all that fear without being able to filter distance it in their minds.

Not that I'd know.

Funny, my girlfriend was just telling me about something called mad pride month.

I read in interesting article about how some children who have been diagnosed with add/adhd , in fact have bipolar disorder instead.

pretty sad to think a child would have this

fnet, thanks, I knew I should have read it

From what I saw a bipolar person in a manic phase acts a lot like Nash did.

I never believed the so-called "mental illnesses" were real until I saw it in someone I know well.

Naaa, i dont really have it. But sometimes lyfe is such a shit, you start to wonder what is the whole point of living ? A constant strugle ? Suffering.....

No matter how much money one got (or other thing people usually want: chicks, fame, power) - suffering never stops. Of course there are bright spots sometimes - but most of the time its just a constant battle. One can't enjoy life for a long time - the bullshit always comes back in much greater numbers (compared to bright spots) and it starts all over again.
