I think a lot of people use search to find out if someones talking about their program or them. I know if it was available i'd whip up a few scripts to track for certain keywords.

Some use it the other way and research before doing biz with someone too.

There is a mod for vb which send you mail if someone wrote targeted keyword.

I agree as well, the 120sec wait between searches is a massive pain in the ass, especially if the initial search got screwed up in the first place.

This has been an issue on gfy since I can remember. Just do a search and find all of the old "improve the search" threads, oh wait, you can't do that.

I don't understand why they can't just replicate the db to a 2nd/3rd server and then use those for searches. The data might be at most a minute or 2 behind. But that's a easy solution...

It's isn't that hard to fix the damn search..

They are working on a pay per search solution.

Searching this many threads is a technical limitation... It's a very costly operation and depending on the number of parameters can really cause a DB to chunk along...

I would recommend a custom search solution using full text indexing in a separate DB that's a slave of this forum's master, only replicating specific tables... there are a number of ways you could set it up to have zero impact on the current site...

Cluster the site and getting another box for db searches = yes, shouldnt be too hard or costly. However, my main concern is that the search works quite bad as it is, and thus I have to search several times just to find what I am looking for. Now, do that 3 times and wait 120 secs every time.. kinda annoying.

just charge for searches.lol

give users 10 free searches a month, then each additional search at $0.25 or something, then people can buy up say 100 searches for $25, etc..

Yeah, but this would require a plugin. Who would build such plugin? I mean this would cost an extra effort.

yup if i ran gfy and was tired of people doing unlimited automated searches, ill either put a captcha, or charge for premium searches...

way better than the long ass delay they got now..

I really wonder what kind of server is using gfy I mean config. It must be monster one, right? 20 GIG of RAM, some nice Quad Core cpu ...or is it even more advanced custom multi cpu solution?

Its no big investment anyway. Today you can get a 16+ core with 32gb ram for like 400 bucks/month... :

I have made some modifications to search that should make things move a little quicker. We are also working on making the search better over all. I will keep you guys posted.

Good stuff Eric... would love to be able to search for all schoolgirl sponsors and content. Would reduce the amount of "SPAM ME" threads.
