My bank recently asked me about the nature of some wire transfers I regularly recieve from the US and overseas, and the woman was also curious about the nature of my business. I said I'm sorry but it's far too involved a process to sit here and try to explain it all to someone who doesn't know first-hand how it's done and how money is made over the internet.

Turns out she was really just interested because she thought those payments were from foriegn investments of mine and she wanted to see if there was any way her bank could take over the handling of those investments. I set her straight on that and they haven't pestered me since.

But I do like DamagX's suggestion of telling them to mind their own business or else.

I would move to another bank. But I disagree with most of the comments in this thread. It's their bank, regardless of what country you're in... with the current state of the world, there is going to be a lot of additional banking regulations to find out what is happening and why. From the financial meltdown, war on terrorism, the war against Iran and North Korea... it's just inevitable. They are trying to protect themselves, they care about their business much more than any of our accounts.

our bank closed us down 2 years ago if anyone still remembers that one..gave us 2 weeks to completely switch out all checking , old checks, blah blah blah then without a hitch killed the accounts and started bouncing checks that we had to pay fees on...

yea "know your customer" is worldwide, which surprised me. US Homeland Security has issued these know your customer forms to every bank in the world.

the form is only to find YOUR information. it does not in any way extend to your customers, employers, or benefactors.

i dont know about the Netherlands, but in the US its illegal to inquire about YOUR customers, unless you are trying to get a line of credit. thats a right to privacy thing.

if you want to stay with that bank, i'd recommend googling the know your customer act and reaming them a bit.
