How long can you comfortably go without being stimulated ?

    Mentally stimulated, of course.

I am finding that over the years I find it increasingly difficult to just sit in silence. If I am on a bus or train, I have to put a radio or my ipod in my ear, for example.

How long can you go without mentally stimulated even if it is just on the most basic level?

I can sit in my yard and stare at the trees for 1/2 hour no prob. But yeah inside ya gotta be doing something at all times it seems.

"stimulated" great word ya don't see enuff.. whichever way ya go with the meaning it's good..

Didn't someone once say that all the world's problems are all caused by the inability of people to sit comfortably in a completely silent room for an extended period of time. I forget the philosopher but someone can look it up if they want.

Basically what it means is if someone can just sit and have no stimulation and still feel comfortable it means their minds are totally clear and free to make the right decisions.

edit: It was a Pascal quote

Meditation (avoiding external stimuli) is good for the mind body and spirit. I suck at it though ;)

I think one of the few times I see it used these days is in ad copy for energy drinks.

I have to admit, I am kind of surprised that you need a radio or ipod to be mentally stimulated. You seem well read enough that your imagination should suffice.

That is what gets me through. I can go days without that kind of stimulation.

Heavy meditation since my early childhood allows me any general timeframe I wish.

I try to meditate for around an hour a day minimum, no outside distractions whatsoever. Helps keep stress and mental fatigue in check.

lately i need something that really touches the senses (mentally) a really great piece of art, museum trips, music, book, something that re-energizes - because there is so little of that here and my favorite websites are so worn out from my visits - i need more more often

I have an active mind but I am also an information junkie. If I am on a train journey, for example, I need to have something to read or listen to or the time just drags.

Oddly though, when I go to see a film, my brain goes into overdrive. I swear, I have sorted out most of the big problems in my life sitting in a cinema watching a film.

this is only sort of related, but i can totally turn on, tune in, drop out (Timothy Leary quote), while snowboarding powder, or while downhill biking in the whis bike park. it's stimulation of a sort, but basically your mind goes completely blank, and you are just moving and reacting. no thoughts, no nothing. just doing. damn i love my life lol.

I can't sit about for too long, I need to be doing something. We live in a warm climate nowadays and my girlfriend can lay on the balcony of our place and sunbathe all day, I lay down next to her for 10 minutes and it feels like an hour. I need to be able to see the tv or listen to music or something. Even when working I need noise as well, I can't sit in silence for too long, it pisses me off.

I long for un-stimulated time. There's always someone around me, or something to do, or .... I really wish I had to drive to the office or take the train, just to be alone with myself at times when I'm not working.

hmm..my head is far from empty..over active is more the case. Maybe putting something else in my brain makes it easier to calm it down?

music often helps me to focus, although there are times when I need complete silence. There is a park not too far from my house that is great for getting lost in the trees in. A walk there is my kind of meditation.
