What is the best Digital Camera and Video Camera out???

I have been using Olympus E-20N, but it seems to have slow write times...
Anything new coming out for Christmas?

I am also looking for a good digital video camera,
what do you recommend?

From a video standpoint, I like the Canon GL-2 for general use.

For stills I've been told the Nikon D100 is good and affordable. You will not have problems with the speed.

You should check out the Sony MDV4.

Consumer reports rated it the no.1 digital camera for under $2,000

Check out Phil's Digital Photography Review site. He has comparison pics for all the top end cameras on his site, and thorough reviews.

Just had a thread about this recently. For stills, people recommend the top of the line Nikon and Canon. Of the two, I recommend the Canon EOS 1DS. Though their baby-brothers, the Nikon D100 and the Canon D60 actually compare quite favourably, for a lot less. I like the Canon, more people seem to like the Nikon. Hope that helps.

The D60 has really lousy auto-focus. Nice pictures but I can't recommend it as a content production camera. I can post samples if anyone is desperate to see the problem. We still use the Fuji S1 because there's nothing on the market right now that justifies replacing it. Very nice skin tones right out of the camera. The Fuji S2 really fails to impress as an upgrade, all of the same problems as the S1 with none of the much needed features (portrait grip shutter release, single battery etc).

The Sony VX2000 is probably the best bet for most content, the only reason we use the GL1 is it has an optical image stablizer rather then a digital one so handheld video is more forgiving. The stability also keeps the size of video files down. We now either use a dolly or a Glidecam mount for all our video stuff so we'll probably switch to the VX2000 soon.

Kiko, not a lot of what you said shows up in the dpreview.com reviews of the cameras. I guess it is a matter of personal taste, and certainly worth keeping in mind... but I wonder if some of your problems are isolated. The Focus on the D60 sure looked nice in the review samples I saw... What circumstances do you have trouble with, and how bad is the focus?

The nice things about the Olympus E20 are that a) you can get one for $900, and b) it has a live digital viewfinder, which no other DSLR has. I am very tempted by this camera, but think I will hold out until I can spare the $2000 for one of the higher-end cameras.

anyone ever try this one?
Kodak - DCS Pro 14n
Looks good, the things they don't tell are the
downfalls or bad points on the cameras.

It does have a big price tag, but not as
much as the canon EOS 1DS $8,000 ouch

Lexar makes a series of CompactFlash cards that are faster then the standard cards. I've gotten the 512mb 24x cards for the E-10 and it helps a lot with the speed. Their more expensive but they're worth the price.

Well not a lot of what I said comes up outside of the demands of adult content production. For one if you are shooting content at least 50% of your shots will be in portrait mode- so a shutter release for that orientation is a big plus.

It is not the custom of reviewers to post unfocused images. The problem with the D30's and the D60's auto focus is fairly well documented. In fact the conclusion of the DPreview D60 review says:

Quote:
One area I think a lot of people expected to be improved is auto focus, and this may be the D60's only achilles heel.
So I don't think it's a "matter of personal taste".

Provided you are willing to work at a slower pace so that the auto-focus can get a lock on the model then the D60 takes very nice pictures.

We normally shoot about 300 images an hour, then select the best from those. With the S1 or other Nikon based SLR bodies we rarely have more then five or six images with focus issues to throw away. After 3 days of shooting at our usual pace and several thousand images we found that normally 5% to 10% had focus issues. Not severe, but not acceptable for real content production and a big problem for a camera of that price range to have.

There are usually several easy to spot "way off" images. More problematic are the ones with subtle problems that require a second look. Here's a typical "problem" image. The focus is just off enough to make the image too soft.
http://www.kikowu.com/email/images/0007.jpg

Most of the images are otherwise quite acceptable:

Sony VX-2000 is the best though a lot of people like the Canon high end cams to because you can switch out the lenses.

I think the Nikon D100 is #1 for digital. Though there are many more with a higher price tag. But that one is priced just right for the quality it produces.

What type and resolution photos are you taking? I shoot at 1600x1200 and save as slightly-compressed JPEG's (Olympus C-4040) and have no problem with write time. Perhaps you're saving TIFFs at a high resolution. Do you really need your images that way if that is the case?

I've got a DCRVX2000 but agree that XL1's are better than DCRVX2000's.. more expensive though so you'd expect it.
I got the VX2000 partly because the 1000 was such a great porn video camera.
