Without paying for traffic, what work to drive ppl to your site

I was just curious what everyone else out there is using to drive traffic to their sites. I was an seo for a large chocolate producing company in pa. I used my skills of seo on my site, I think I am pretty good in that area. What other methods work (NO SPAMMING)?

Just trying to get some ideas.
    Thanks

Don't laugh...one time I saw a want ad for a full-time in-house SEO specialist. In Pennsylvania, nonetheless (no, not Hershey)! I really had no idea what it entailed. I scored an interview and spent a day reading up on SEO.

During the interview I mostly talked about how the Florida update was a big game changer (that's why they were hiring somebody -- they lost their page 1 on their main keywords) and even those who knew all about SEO didn't really know much anymore ... I said I was eager to learn and would be in the same boat as anybody else that they hired. It worked and they hired me. Luckily, I ended up doing a good job and they were happy.

My point is that a lot of companies that hire for SEO have no idea what they're looking for. Any good bullshitter can get in the door. It's what you do after getting in the door that matters.

in 2001 there were maybe 10,000 pro webmasters that knew what SEO meant. 2001 was pre-"googling". you didnt have to do much to get listed or get a lot of traffic. even thehun was still pretty new.

in 2009 there are millions of pro webmasters that all read the same SEO books and all use the same submit forms. there are millions of websites cutting each others throats for a piece of the surfer's dollar.

a friend of mine owns a used cell phone store next to a dirty bus station in thailand. i tell her she's lucky because her competition is limited to her neighboring stores.

online your competition is endless. no boundaries to competition.

SEO is useless. even if u are #1, numbers 2-9 will figure out a way to cut your feet out from under you.

moral of the story, you either have to cut down your competition or read "the long tail" and figure out how to get a piece of everything.

Sort of....because so many new people were coming online.
But we were trading back and forth for the number one spot on sextracker with The Hun and AL4A back in 1998. The Hun was one of the biggest sites in the world in 2001 and had been for many years. And as new people were coming online they had already heard of us guys with bigger tgps like The Hun before they even got a computer.

These days though, the first things they type in are tubes and torrents with stolen content.

What surfers are you referring too, as the hun circa 1996 to 2001 was the mother lode of traffic, meaning surfers ALREADY knew that site.

Yep, when I was "Amp" at ampland for 10 years I was a legend in high schools around the world. And the beauty of it was that they grew up through their teen years jerking off to my tgps. Then when they got older and got a credit card, I was the guy they trusted (all of our tgps are "real" no blindlink circle jerk shit) to finally get to go into a premium members area.

I was clearing 3 grand a day in paysite sales as an affiliate.

Now? Those 15 year old boys are jerking off to full scenes with NO link to the paysite that it came from and instead of anticipating the day that they would finally have a job and a credit card to see everything...they are being taught that "everything" is free and to never pay for a paysite membership again.

These are some effects that we are just now starting to feel as some of those teen viewers reach adulthood and get a credit card and then DON'T buy a membership. It's something that is getting worse as each day goes by and a new teenage boy hears about one of the monster illegit tubes at school.

                                                            One more future customer...gone.

I could probably go into business as a SEO guy and get way better results than most. There are so many different aspects and things to it. But to the OP, if you were a SEO guy, you should know how to drive some traffic.
