I wouldn't think the extreme is true. Someone that actually has a 1.5 installed, that isn't hacked to death, that simply needs an upgrade... Probably not. And if it is the extreme, the host should probably know about it, as the Wordpress install is more than likely hacked and your db is trashed. Prob going to need a tad more than an upgrade.

... anyway, just making sure your thinking before you speak.

Even if its from an older version, unless he has some very weird plugins running, or major mods done at most it would be 70.00 labor wise to do an upgrade. I've done lots of 1.5 to newest versions without any real issues.

Skipped reading entire thread but thread starters post.

All I can say is its simple, have your host do it. If your not on a fully managed box and you dont know how to upgrade WP yourself your pissing up a down spout.

Bottom line, Mojo Host TODAY upgraded no less then 10 WP installs for me and took not too long at all. Get in the game mate, get with mojo.

I dont even want to upgrade but it got hacked from a worm and now I have to. I hate upgraading, iIlove older simpler versions of things.

see, the problem here is that based on the answers I saw in this thread most people that posted smart ass comments have no clue about what they're talking about. It's not a coincidence that Grouchy Admin and Woj gave the most valuable input so far: they know their shit.

If you're upgrading from 1.5 to 2.8 there are many variables that can go wrong. Non working plugins is the easiest one. Let's follow with database issues, database tables left by plugins that won't work, themes with deprecated tags (hello!!! 1.5 and 2.8 tags are quite different!!!!), possible javascript issues and so on. It's evident most people here thinks they just need to upgrade automatically (which, of course, won't work) and that all versions between 1.5 and 2.8 didn't even exist. Let alone if you were already attacked and you still have vulnerabilities in your server.

In short, the question is: can you pay it? if answer is yes: will it save you a headache? will you continue to make money? is it worth the time you'll save instead of having to learn things you'll ever need in the future? can you afford to let newbies handle a site that makes you money? Consider all that, ask for guarantees and references and then act accordingly. And don't pay attention to GFY funny guys, they won't save your business, they can't even save theirs!

PS: the above being said, unless your site is a real mess, the price is a little high. If your site is a mess (which is quite possible since you were attacked and already had a failed install by your server guys), and they can guarantee results, the price is really low

PS2: see a list of deprecated tags at http://core.trac.wordpress.org/brows...deprecated.php

PS3: see what it takes to upgrade 1.5 to 2.0 at http://tamba2.org.uk/wordpress/upgrade2two/ Then think this is the easiest one (1.5 to 2.0) 2.8 has even more changes

Oh come on. You back up the sql db, backup the full folder for the wp install before hand just incase. Go in and disable all current plugins, mark down which ones are in use, go back to the default theme. Delete the include and admin folder. Upload the new files. Log into wp admin. Click the upgrade button you should now see. As long as that goes ok, you go back in, reactivate your plugins, switch back to the theme you were using and make sure everything is working. A 6th grader should have no problem with it.

Honestly if you are a webmaster and can't figure out how to do that you need to go work at kfc or something. No offense, but this is day one stuff. There are extremely clear instructions and tutorials on the wp site, and instructions for any issues you might have.

I upgraded some old ass ones the other day without a single issue, and those were pretty modified ones. Then again I see a lot of the "non newbies" Or old timers who are lucky to be able to even setup wp to begin with.

And if he did infact get the "worm" thats out there there are clearcut instructions on how to fix that as well. Wordpress is one of the easiest blog software to install, upgrade, modify, etc etc. Thats why its so friggin popular.

Again no offense to anyone, but if you can't handle doing something like this, and you work as a webmaster, you need to learn how to do it on your own.

this is assuming you're using default or really well made themes and everything is perfect and you have no customizations in code, plugins or whatever. If you're using custom themes, chances are you'll need to replace deprecated tags to the very least (let alone if the customization uses plugin includes)

See, there were 3000+ WP plugins by November 2008. The list of them that works in WP2.8 (as documented in http://codex.wordpress.org/Plugins/P...patibility/2.8 ) is the following:

256 plugins. less than 10% of the active documented plugins less than 1 year ago. It's safe to assume somebody using WP1.5 will have trouble with his/her plugins, unless he's using only that lucky 8-10% of working plugins. And if not, he'll need plugins and databases updated. Probably plugins will need to be replaced and databases converted. if you can do that kind of work for $20, I've shitloads of work for you. Just convert, rebuild and test databases takes me several hours (I'm pretty dumb, I admit it), so I'd be happy to give that work to anyone willing to do it for 5 or 20 buck as I saw in this thread

Anyway, just guessing, because to be honest I have no fucking idea, just talking out of my ass

Must be a joke. Upgrading wordpress will only take you a couple of minutes (on a slow ftp connection).

Ok so you are assuming that someone that can't do a wp upgrade on his own has an extremely hacked and plugin filled wp install? I guess he paid someone 500.00 to setup the blog and customize all the plugins? lol I think you are just playing devils advocate lol.

It's not fucking rocket science. No matter what some in this thread say. $230 is WAY TOO MUCH.

it dosent seem like upgrading is the problem. seems like backing everything up and then making it work again is the real issue. i could point and click at the upgrade button on my blog and it would probably be done in no time. but would all my files be compromised and the db. maybe. there are directions on how to back that stuff up but it seems like quite a pain unless you have the necessary requirements.
