Many people have a book that changed their life or music that means a lot to them. I think journeys or trips also have a deep impact in people's lives. What trip or journey did you take change your life? Did it change your life because it made you see things differently/mature you or because certain things happened in your journey/trip?
What trip or journey did you take that changed your life?

The firs trip I took to Dominican Republic (after having a sense of what earning a buck was all about)
Such a beautiful country, and so many great people, but such a poor and impoverished country. I came back kissing the ground I walked on when I hit the states. Till this day when ever I feel the need to complain about things I just remember how much more worst people around the world have it than me, and makes me appreciate things way much more. -

seems like anytime i leave the USA, i have a life changing experience....seeing other countries and how life can be simpler and happier always seems to make me see things in my life clearer...each and every trip makes me see the world differently and allows me to see the flaws in my own country....see what is really important and what is just silliness..Comment

Is it based on what you ACTUALLY SEE or what you WANT TO SEE? Oftentimes, I ask: is the REALITY behind certain things that I consider important something I bring to the picture or does it exist outside of me...seems like anytime i leave the USA, i have a life changing experience....seeing other countries and how life can be simpler and happier always seems to make me see things in my life clearer...each and every trip makes me see the world differently and allows me to see the flaws in my own country....see what is really important and what is just silliness..Comment

The United States Marines changed my life.
I was seventeen, a drug addict, and homeless. I had no direction in life, and no purpose in life. I was just drifting and heading towards of a life of fail. Three months of boot camp fixed that shit.

We leaved or resort in Koh Samui (Thailand) earlier to go to Koh san Road in Bangkok. Then we decided never to go on an organised trip again and take a backpack when we are on holiday (except for some suntrips when we just want to lay down). In Bangkok we visited the famous Bangkwang prison (Bangkok Hilton) and met a dutchman who had life sentence. To make a long story short. We made a website for him together with a woman from Holland so he got a lot visitors. Thanks to a lot of people he got free after 10 years when he got a pardon from king Bhumibol from Thailand after our queen visited Thailand. We helped to make a book of it, and it was a bestseller (in Holland). When you read the book, you will never think about smuggling drugs for a few dollars. It worked better than a "war on drugs".
But every trip make you see life different. There are a lot interesting countries.

For me it was two trips. First when I was 25 years old I moved from a small town in Oregon to Los Angeles to take a shot at being a screenwriter. I knew nobody in LA. I had no job lined up and didn't really know what I was going to to do. I ended up moving back to Portland about 3 years later, but it was because I hated living in LA and realized that while I love movies I really didn't care for the system you have to go through to make them. Anyway, the trip really taught me that I can take car of myself and I can accomplish things if I set my mind to it.
The second was when I went to Egypt. It really is amazing to see and humbling in many ways. It inspired awe in what people can accomplish and it made me realize just how lucky I am to live where I live and have what I have.Comment

I've been fortunate to have been able to travel the world extensively. If you get off the tourist path, it is truly a life changing experience.
You find that there is so much pain and suffering in the world, but also so much compassion and beauty. You also discover ways in which you can make your own society better.
I ascribe to the maxim, "think globally, act locally".
I consider myself a planetary citizen, and as such I proactively try to act in ways, and think of ways, in which to make this small blue planet better, both in the present, and in the future.
