Dam $80 to get a expired domain back

from Godaddy. This really blows. I let a domain expire and it's already out of my account. I know it's all my fault but $80 to put it back in my account is pretty ridiculous.

how can you complain? they give you a lonnnng time to renew and email you many times as well, why blame the registrar?

yup I once paid $75 to get a free site domain url back and sure it sucks but the only one to blame is yourself for not watching your emails they send..

I now have a text file with all my domains i own and their renewal dates that i check from time to time. I also for my paysites and cash site actually set up a "b-day" reminder type thing on my cellphone to let me know 2 weeks before they are due to renew cause i don't trust auto renewals to work all the time.

80 is very inexpensive comparatively, though

You'd pay more at some registrars

                                  I would guess nothing

ICANN takes only 20 cents from domain registrations, even redemption's. But, in the past they have "suggested" to Registrars an $80 minimum. The fee is not an ICANN rule though and is at the Registrars discretion. Since it's such a hassle for the Registrar $80 is probably reasonable. Other than the standard 20 cents per year ICANN gets nothing.

So the $150 > $250 fees some Registrars charge are within their accreditation rights.

It doesn't matter.. no one else can get the domain right now, and don't think for a moment that you can just snap it back up after the redemption period ends... your "super hot" domain will be on a million expired domain lists.. and I gaurantee it'll be you vs. whoever wants that domain..

So why not just say what the domain is? Unless your actually thinking of letting it expire.. which is a dumbass move especially if it's as good as you say it is...

                                            That's OK, Namecheap takes 250$.

And Godaddy got all the prices much better.

FYI you should be able to renew it for the normal price for the first week or two after expiration I believe. Sounds like you let this one go for a while.

Yea but that is within the 30 day period I'd guess? Most registrars charge $0-2 as long as you renew It within 30 day's of expire.

Yeah, if anyone let's it go longer than 30 days, there's no reason to be crying about it -- at that point it's their own fault.

Use auto renewal and you won't have the issue, if godaddy doesn't offer it switch to moniker

godaddy does have auto renew, it's switched on automatically when you register the domain. if you switch off auto renew and then ignore about 5 to 10 emails about the domain expiring I am not sure how Godaddy would be to blame...

The registrar I use does give me a week or so past expiration at same price. Then it jumps up in price and is released sometime after 30 days or so.

Like most registrars, it does have auto renew optional. They also start mailing you roughly 2-3 months in advance of it comming up for renew. During final month it goes quickly from once a week, to twice a week, to 4 times a week, to daily during the few days. Then as a kicker they email you 1 day after, and then 1 week after. I am sure they mail more. I just set up filters to trash domain emails for names I want to expire. So I try not to check.

I do know I just got like a list of 15-20 in one email that were set to expire on the 15th or I guess did. Anyways the email slipped past my filters and I noticed they sent me a renewal letter on the 16th.

BCYber, you've missed that renewal notices for so long. Set autorenewal if you forgot to renew ;).
But don't worry, same thing will cost you 250$ at Namecheap ;)

If you're still pissed at Godaddy (and not pissed at yourself) you might transfer domains to Moniker - almost same prices, moer secure and reliable.
They got discounts for .COM .NET registrations, renewals and TRANSFERS until end of year ;)

                                                            http://www.webmasterinter.net/2009/1...-from-moniker/

This way transfer + 1 year will cost you about same as 1 year fee itself so you lose few cents for domains that are going to expire (you lose few days of paid period).
