Russian Ship Vanished In European Waters

LONDON ? First the ship reported it had been attacked in waters off Sweden. Then it sailed with no apparent problems through one of the world's busiest shipping lanes. And then it disappeared.

The Arctic Sea, a Maltese-flagged cargo ship, was supposed to make port in Algeria with its cargo of timber on Aug. 4. More than a week later, there's no sign of the ship or its Russian crew.

Piracy has exploded off the coast of lawless Somalia ? but could this be an almost unheard of case of sea banditry in European waters?

Odd that it has been missing a week and just shows up in the news an hour ago here....

I don't think that's too uncommon, is it? Long distance traveling on a ship isn't an exact science and if a ship shows up a week later than expected it's not a big deal.

This is odd though. They reported they were boarded and tied up and no one investigated further? Strange.

I can see where a week may not seem like that much but it was in contact after being attacked off Sweden, going through the English Channel and was sighted off Portugal. After the last sighting that leaves about 1000 miles to go, maybe less. Odd that no one tried to raise them via radio, ship to shore or Sat phone.
