In Guatemala I use Convergence. They seem to reach a lot of places there but not in very remote parts. Honduras has a company called NetSys. They may have wireless USB by now as they seemed to be getting fairly advanced from Central America, but I'm not sure.

You could also use a satellite internet service if you needed something all the time, no matter where you are. Usually though, hot spots or a place to jack in are popping up everywhere, even in places you would never think.

Only been traveling in larger cities here in South America but never had a problem. Hotspots are everywhere and if you live somewhat central most hotels have internet too.

That aside, down here it's popular with mobile internet, if you have a cellphone that supports it you can buy prepaid cards to get online, it's not that expensive.

Operators like Claro, Tigo, CTI etc I believe all has some form of it.

In really remote villages or islands your best bet is local mobile carriers.

If you have a windows mobile phone you can plug it strait into your laptop and use it as a modem if not you'll need one of those devices like Baddog .

Usually you'll have a GPRS or EDGE connection, not blistering speeds but enough for basic needs.
