I noticed what at first glance looked like a piece of shit on the bed, but at closer inspection it was a weird, living creature. It looked like a cross between a snake and a centipede/insect of some kind.

Anyone out there have a clue what the hell it could be?

It displayed regenerative properties, as it's tail was starting to grow back after I assume being bitten off by my dog. We're taking the dog to the vet right now just in case the creature could be toxic.

It's 100% certainly a caterpillar. His real eyes are tiny and hard to see. Those huge "eyes" are just markings on his body to make him appear to have larger eyes and therefore be a much larger/more dangerous/difficult to eat animal.

It's larva not lava, and moth (or butterfly) larva is just another way of saying caterpillar.

It's a moth caterpillar of some sort, obviously grows its wings after a short period.

LOL, my god yall are so silly.

It's merely a larva (caterpillar) of one of your native species of swallowtail butterflies. The eyespots are used as deterrents against predators, much like those of many moths in the Saturniidae family.

The entomology site I contribute taxonomic data to does not cover Central American insects, but I'm going to look around and see if I can nail down a specific genera for you.

At any rate, no need to freak out - if you happened to know what it's host plant was you could rear it into adulthood. I'll post again shortly.

I can't find a perfect match to that larva, but I know it's some swallowtail (Papilionidae) genera.

On another note, I'm trying to rear 40-50 Automeric cecrops pamina larvae, which look like this:
