PHOENIX - Four boys between the ages of 9 and 14 are in police custody after they allegedly raped an 8-year-old girl.

The boys, ages 9, 10, and 13 are being detained at the Juvenile Corrections Center. The 14-year-old, Steven Tuopeh, has been remanded as an adult.

The rape happened about 5:15 p.m. July 16 in a toolshed near 45th Ave and Thomas. Police say the girl was lured into the shed with the promise of chewing gum. The boys allegedly restrained her while taking turns sexually assaulting her.

Phoenix Police held a press conference 3:30 p.m. Wednesday to announce the arrests. According to police, the victim and the suspects are all from Liberia, west Africa, and appeared to have known each other.

The child is currently in Child Protective Services having been disowned by her parents after the assault. Detectives say her parents blame her for being victimized and bringing shame to their family.

All the suspects have admitted their involvement in the sexual assault. The 9-year-old is facing one count of sexual assault, the 10-year-old is facing charges of kidnapping and 2 counts of sexual assault, the 13-year-old is facing kidnapping and 3 counts of sexual assault, and Tuopeh is facing kidnapping and 2 counts of sexual assault.

This has gone way past the level of some kids who just need a good ass-beating.

If you're at all surprised by the behavior of the girl's parents, you should read Infidel by Ayaan Hirsi Ali. I personally feel for all of these children, because they are all children who clearly have not had the benefit of a good education in the ways that it counts, and the lack of supervision that would allow for this crime of violence to occur.

And compounding the horror of the story of brutality is considering a 14 year old child an "adult"! Insult to injury was never more applicable.

There is undisputed medical evidence that the brain does not finish growing until aproximately the age of 21 in both male and female. The last parts to mature are the portions that allow you to see the consequences of your actions and feel compassion and empathy for others. (it's disputed that some people never feel for others, but anyway..)

There used to be a legal distinction between children and adults. The age of 18. I bet most are familiar with it, sigh. WTF is going on with our "justice" system when they simply consider any child an adult depending on how "big" the crime was? It should be insulting to everyone.

These CHILDREN are disturbed and need help, not a lifelong education in high crime!

Did anyone watch the video? You have the victims sister stating that it couldn't have happened because her sister is too little. The mother of two of the boys stating they couldn't have done it for the same reason. The father of the victim stating that he never said his daughter has bought shame to the family but doesn't necessarily believe she was raped. And the mother apparently left her daughter standing there traumatized with the police and walked away.
I feel so bad for that girl and I really hope they don't drop the ball with helping her through this situation.

I don't know what I would do if that was my daughter, but we certainly would not disown her.

These kids deserve nothing less than a good Caning, but they will probably get probation and then released because our justice system sucks ass when it comes punishment for crimes committed by juveniles?. There is no excuse for their actions and should be made to pay dearly.

Sad thing is , when they go to jail and or prison, they will be in general population due to their race, as blacks don't enforce child molster and rape rules like whites do!

If a white person does this and goes to jail, they will be dealt with on a much greater scale than the courts will serve them! I am stating facts! A white rapist or molester will be beat down bad or killed right away, by other white boys who will not live next to a piece of garbage, that does things like this!

Let's hope in the long run she is better off.

It's hard to imagine her ending up in a worse place than the "home" she came from. With any luck the system will find her a decent one.

In the meantime, the rest of them - including the parents of everyone involved - should be fucking deported.

Only wish that the system would allow this as a way of punishment in our society. Even the kids. When you do something as wrong as this is, even the kids deserve a true punishment. In fact, this will probably make a bigger impact on them than some juvenile jail would.
