Houston, We Erased The Apollo 11 Tapes...

An exhaustive, three-year search for some tapes that contained the original footage of the Apollo 11 moonwalk has concluded that they were probably destroyed during a period when NASA was erasing old magnetic tapes and reusing them to record satellite data.

"We're all saddened that they're not there. We all wish we had 20-20 hindsight," says Dick Nafzger, a TV specialist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, who helped lead the search team.

That sucks. I just caught an hour long piece on PBS about the apollo 11 mission, including some moonwalking footage btw. So at least there's those small bits.

the footage that they do have is simply amazing. probably saw the same one when they went over the entire landing within seconds of not being able to land / lost forever. great footage

That's really sucks. I believe that Apollo 11 expedition really was at the Moon. On the other hand, I believe that the famous video everyone saw was actually filmed somewhere in Hollywood just because it was almost impossible for those times to air it to Earth in real time.

they should have been backed up immediatly and the originals stored in the best care possible.

We where not the first on the moon anyway, if we even went to the moon.
They shat bricks when they saw there where already ruins and buildings, thought "gfy" and went straight back to earth.

Right. Because that's the sort of footage you just leave laying around so you can erase by mistake or lose track of.

You would also leave the camera that shot that footage behind on the moon, where it belongs.
