But I think they can be used in more or less manual mode? I don't want to trade links with just any site but I think these scripts also have advantages, like auto backlink checking, and easily display links on multiple sites?

LinkEx is pretty much manual. I think you can set it for no auto-approve.
You can review/edit the links from inside the administrator area. It's great.
Why pay for Link Organizer?
This post makes me sure you have no idea about the features of Links Organizer. It is cheap as fuck and can do way more than LinkEx. This thread is like comparing a Commodore 64 and a Mac
Just wondering.. silly question perhaps, but is it not possible for webmasters who use LO to trade with webmasters who use linkex? :S
I'm pretty sure you can manually enter your trades in your LinkEx, then use the checker to verify whenever. I haven't used it this way, but I'm pretty sure it's possible, so correct me if I'm wrong.
Another vote for Link Organizer and all of kaktusan's scripts

We use Link Organizer for our network of blogs ... works great, lets us manually approve trades but on the other hand automatically disables trades that removed our link.
Homer,
for sure use the local includes if the sites displaying the trades are on same server like LO, performace is better. For remote sites, doesn't matter what will you use.
Don't forget to check out the linkex trades exporter tool i have, it will save you a lot of time migrating
