I need to make back money from hosting, paid traffic, content, domains etc and it'd also be nice if i could keep my surfers happy and not destroy the reputation of my domains with pathetic download speed and downtime.

The reliability isnt the only problem i have with LW, the service i have come to discover is pretty piss poor also. i added 12 domains to likewhoa hosting and thier stats program is working on 3, i've tried many times to correct this, manually and via support , all i want is for someone there to go and fix it and i can't get anyone to do that.

I have heard great things about swiftco.com and isprime.com as well. I was looking for lower bandwidth (3Mbps) and thumbserver won me over, otherwise I would have probably went with any one of the three.

However you will note some things:

1. Our network is up.
2. Our network is fast.
3. Your network is neither fast nor up(frequently)
4. I'm not on Yipes, Cogent , or verio
5. We actually push 3gbps. you push 500mbps or less.
6. You oversell your network.

I am not an adult hosting guy, but I do work extensively on VPN's using frame relay or ip enabled frame or Citrix....any of the downtime you guys are talking about would certainly destabilize "mission critical" operations in the business world. VPN's require 99.9% uptime and there better be a damn good reason for the .01 it's down or a CEO of a REAL company would be chewing your ass. I don't understand why adult hosting cannot match the stability we demand in the business world. Downtime of any kind is simply not tolerated, here it seems a way of life.

I can imagine having this conversation with Ed Rust, president of State Farm insurance, he would simply show you the door and get a real hosting company. Of course the number of OC-48 pipes they have going into their home office would amaze you.

On a positive note, I haven't ever had any downtime with Sinhost(that equals zero, by the way) and they are actually nice...Their pricing structure makes Like Whoa look pitiful and Brad is always nice to me....even when I am a week late paying my bill. He does send a few well worded emails, tho.

I am not getting paid to promote Sinhost, I have had four or so hosts and some have been good, couple have been terrible and Sinhost is probably the best I have been with. Brad has never taken me to lunch or anythng, and I think that would be in order. Free food always tastes better.

On thing I will say, is that Brad and Corey take pride in the quality of the product they deliver...unlike many hosts who give you the impression they are doing you a favor by granting you hosting. Thier pride in their work reflects in their results. Kinda corny I know, but that does not make it less true.

Maybe we should look at it like this, the more they are down the better it is for webmasters not on them, more traffic for us:thumbsup

After reading thread after thread about hosting issues I need to ask this.

If you have your own server or can justify buying one why don't you just colocate in a tier one provider? Rent rack space, buy bandwidth and what ever level of support your are willing to pay for. It works for us and has for years, if we are down for 5 minutes I call and get an answer. I doubt we have been down for an accumulated hour in the past year.

well, you can do that - but you're basically putting all of your eggs in one big basket then. say you colocated direct with verio, and verio had a problem with its pipes. well, you're down.

say you're colocated with a provider using verio, level3, tons of private peering, nationwide network, etc. say verio or level3 go down, you're still up.

there are definite advantages to going with a so-called "tier 2" provider.

The reason why there is so much downtime in this industry is that adult webmasters do NOT want to spend any money to ensure stability and reliability.

Daily I am asked why I want to charge $99 for rental on a dedicated server. Can I skimp on some parts? perhaps include something used so it is cheaper?

A real world business says, we have a $10K budget and we demand a solution that will not experience downtime. And a decent host can work a $10K solution that will not go down. The adult webmaster wants the same solution with no upfront investment and no risk.

Go figure why so many hosts are having downtimes. It's hard to provide quality when your clients wont pay for it.

And you wonder why I got out of virtual hosting. If I ever do get back into vhosting, I think I have to go with Lostmind who has the right approach. Do it right, and then you'll have all the success.

If I where to do it again, not that I am considering it...because I am not.....I would go with a 1 TB fiber channel storage and a fault tolerant cluster setup. At some point, some one will put together a solution for you guys that wouldn't go down. At $1.00-$2.00/gig, this type of a solution would work. If you take a look, $1.00/gig is $324/mbps. I wonder where all this money is going?

Virtual hosting is not too terribly hard. just keep adding servers as you add customers. Be prepared to migrate some customers to balance out loads.

If you want a host with gauranteed 5 minutes of downtime or less per YEAR then ICQ me. That's 99.999% garaunteed uptime. less than 30 seconds per month of downtime. I have had 0 minutes of downtime in 4 years.

I am so sick of hearing about all this bullshit downtime and everyone talks like it cannot be prevented, and it's 'best effort' as garauntees mean nothing. If you have a backup for everything and automatic switchover on failures, you have no downtime... So, it's not just the people who work there, it's the hardware itself that can prevent this.
