UNH did a study approx. 10 years ago.

They found that 95% of all small cap (under $500k) deals were funded by friends and family.

They also found that institutions funded 95% of deals over $500k.

I use www.kiva.org to lend to those in need but they're usually entrepreneurs from low income/third world countries.
