I do use WP for review sites.
Edited WP quite a lot, added custom fields and a few plugins.

Sure, no problem. You can easily tweak a Wordpress theme to turn it into a review type of site, but if you are serious, you'd better look at a custom solution or some pre made script like Konrad's. Wordpress is nice and very complex indeed, but in the long run it will give you a lot of headaches having to always upgrade, having to look out on the plugins you use and so on... At least, that's my opinion. It really depends on your needs afterall and yeah, you can start with a cheap Wordpress solution and upgrade as your site grows... Good luck.
