The primary difference is that Clinton connected with everyone. He didn't care if you lived in New York city or if you lived in a town of 300 in the middle of nowhere he embraced you. Palin loves to use the term "real America" and when she does that she is normally speaking to the rural parts of the country. The people who don't live on those parts of the country wonder just what part of America they do live in and it makes her seem like she is out of touch with half the nation. Whenever something doesn't go her way she starts talking about how the liberal this or the liberal that doesn't understand "real America" It is pretty annoying.Comment

I guess I should have said it differently. I didn't mean that everyone connected with him. I meant that he connected with everyone in the same way. If he was speaking to a group of people he spoke them all the same and he didn't bash other parts of the country to score cheap points with the people he was talking to.
I understand everyone didn't vote for him, but he worked hard to connect with people on common grounds not by pitting one group of people against another.Comment

Agree with you more or less then; but I would note Bill Clinton had his attack dog in Hillary (vast right wing conspiracy stuff) and she became the lightening rod in their political team, while Bill then could act above the fray. You still can't win in politics without dividing up the camps and the Clintons played up the divisions as good as anyone ever did.
As for this thread and how Bill Clinton got brought up; comparing Clinton (Rhodes Scholar) to Sarah Palin doesn't make sense at all to me even with both having been governors. For sure Clinton had Hilary as his attack dog. That is how it works. The presidential candidate has someone on the team that can attack and they can stay above it all and "not endorse" what the attack dog is saying.
Palin kind of played that role for McCain. The problem with doing that is if you lose and then want to run for office yourself you are married to those statements. Some of that stuff Hilary said, literally 16+ years ago was brought back up during this last election. With Palin it so soon after the last election that she and some of the stuff she said and did is still right out there in the public's recent memory.Comment
