Costa Rica?
Does anyone on the board live and do business in Costa Rica?
Do you recommend it? How are the taxes and banking issues? How is the Internet access? Can you host servers there or would you leave them in the US? How is the acceptance of our business? Thanks in advance |

I hear ya Probono...
I keep trying to talk the woman into other countries, but being here in AZ is far away enough from family she says :/ If I had my druthers I'd be in either Brazil, Costa Rica, Chile or Argentina....

Depends if you are loaded with the baggage of being a US citizen - in that case you are stuck with taxes for life. Yes.. we operate from Costa Rica and can recommend it for any internet operations. There are no taxes as such, the tax regime is geographical based in that any earnings from outside Costa Rica are not taxable. There are no complusary registration forms and crap to fill in and banking is fine... Costa Rica is not a place to host servers - there are plenty other more suitable jurisdictions for that. As for "acceptance", nobody gives a shit. There is obviously strong opposition to any CP material - they got their priorities sorted out on that one and sick of these assholes. The main thing about CR is "freedom" - it has one of the most stable and democratic govts in the world. The environment is another "plus" in that you can choose the environment/temperature ya want to live in :-) As for the CIA fact book - hell knows where they dream that shit up! *g* |

Did you by any chance expatriate? I'm a us citizen, and have been considering that. I just want to be able to have as much or almost as much access to the us as i do now as citizen... which it seems that some visitors pull off... except they have more benefits! (not dissimilar to how sometimes "close" family can be the worse assholes ever, and strangers more polite and generous... or the phrase 'it's a nice place to visit, but i wouldn't want to live there!' -- maybe it should be 'it's a nice place to visit or live for awhile, but i wouldn't want to maintain my citizenship there!' ;)) It'd be great to change my citizenship to somewhere else, but still be able to enjoy the people and cities here that I love -- at least every now and then. Do you (or anybody else here) know anything about that? |

Yes.. I ain't no expert on US tax laws (thank God! *g*).. but it is one of only four countries that tax citizens globally (Some others are Libia, Saudi and a few other "rogue places" *g*) Personally I think "citizenship" is just a grab all and means little in the end - folks have themselves to answer to first, then they can choose citizenship. There are plenty US folks "escaping" abroad and a good few come to Costa Rica. Many have "residency" here and a few have taken up citizenship. Most of us are expats.. we have full access to our countries of birth or citizenship. I understand from a few US people, sometimes it ain't a matter of you "giving up citizenship" as opposed to the govt accepting it :-) Seems the more money you earn the less chance of em accepting the idea *g* Yep.. seems the reporting requirement is there for all US citizens - on earnings just over 70K a year and you are expected to pay taxes on this. I dunno the degree of reporting US folks do, but on a recent survey by the IRS to US people abroad, only 30% bothered to respond and most of em had never paid taxes *g*.. So you can get a clue from that. But basically, the "golden rule" is, "don't shit in your own backyard or in the country you are currently resident". You can still retain US citizenship as normal and have "residency" elsewhere.. |
