It's not a bad thing at all, it's completly normal and google understands it. Just think about wordpress, joomla and drupal. Also how many sites have in footer "Designed by...". It's a natural thing, nothing wrong with it.

I disagree with that completely.

and don't get me wrong, I'm not going to do it myself, but I think legally that a theme designer wouldn't have any legal recourse against someone that removes the links from a "free" theme

Also, insisting too much about your footer link, is against yourself.. it will increase people who remove the sig...

if you dont say anything, a lot won't even notice about it... and wont remove it...

saying too many times "dont remove my sig" will only make more and more people remove it... just stay still if you want to have a little hope about building pr...

Ya you should make it not use custom fields, its really annoying to enter a url for the image everytime, just write a function to grab it from the attachment
