Actually, World News Asia TV was interviewing an ex CIA agent yesterday and he was saying that without question, many of these protests are being pushed, and some even organized, by the CIA. While this may or may not be true, the CIA is known for meddling in governmental affairs of other nations, so if it is accurate, it's of no big surprise.

What I do know is this, I don't put anything past anyone when it comes to power and money.

I'm sure there are plenty of pro-western / reformist people willing to organize--especially considering under-30 represents much of Iran's population. I'm a bit on the fence about the CIA, b/c the CIA didn't see this current shit storm coming. Given the short amount of time to influence people to move, the massive organization muscle and risk (your assets would be detained / discovered) it seems like just something to say b/c it is highly likely the CIA has assets in reformist circles.

Now, about the signs -- I think it is over-representation / familiarity-bias more than anything else.

If you only speak English (or a European language) and you are in a country that speaks Farsi you are going to tend to take pictures of signs that are in English.

All the information that we are receiving is through filter (what U.S. media is allowed to and chooses to take in Iran) after filter (what news sources decide to show) -- consider the b.s. photochoped pics the Iranian state-run media tried to put out after A'd (sp :) ) rally.
