really? that's kind of fascinating to me. i mean i think he was a lunatic and full of shit.. but at the same time, i think it would be sort of interesting and sobering to sit in a room full of people and listen to all that... looking around seeing everyone stare in total amazement.
how did you meet him? at a speaking engagement?Comment

Yeah, about 10 years ago at a convention. I chatted with him briefly after. He makes it sound pretty believable, but I agree, he's a nutbar.really? that's kind of fascinating to me. i mean i think he was a lunatic and full of shit.. but at the same time, i think it would be sort of interesting and sobering to sit in a room full of people and listen to all that... looking around seeing everyone stare in total amazement.

This is fucked up!
This is my analysis....
I think a few bad apples using Smart Thumb used exploits. I remember cruising Google for key phrases and would come across TGPs that would lock you in until you clicked or download something. The site would eventually die a quick death but another would pop right back up with these exploits.
Google's algorithm couldn't keep up because Google bot would be re-directed to a clean version of the site. My theory is that Google did a manual manipulation of its search algorithm to throw back sites using Smart Thumbs. The bad apples using Smart Thumbs cause this Google backlash.

yes! google is super concerned with relevant porn results. nothing they hate more than having a surfer typein "asian ladyboys sucking assholes" and getting mixed results back. This is fucked up!

they don't manually manipulate results. they just don't. they don't look at 1.5 trillion stored pages and try to figure out how to improve the results for "donkey fucked teens"
that's not how search engines work... and its self defeating if you have to manually create good results vs find a tweak to algorithmically produce the best results. further, looking in that direction doesn't give you a solution (although it would be quite expected for everyone to jump on the "there's nothing i can do and its not my fault" bandwagon which is popular in porn)
since i have free ST sites with ZERO outbound links and NOTHING going on that also ended up getting penalized, i would suggest again that it has to with the smart thumbs link and how those links link to other sites. its not about whether a site has it or not (paid or free version).. its about those sites, and who's linking to who and the general link matrix itself.
there is ZERO contextual relevance between "smart thumbs" and "naked midgets" and the these sites are typically shitty, low quality sites that look EXACTLY like an auto generated link farm from a search engines eyes without a decent number of quality back links. Just pages with zero info with 100's of outbound links per page. linking to what can be considered a spam site can hurt you just as much as having your own network of spam sites interlinked can hurt you. having a "clean site" that gets penalized tells you that you should also be looking at your link trades and who you are trading hard links with. you'll find that your "clean site" suddenly just got a little dirtier.
why is this happening for sure? who knows. i personally dont care enough to figure it out because the TGP model in its traditional form is 100% doomed to fail no matter what. we used ST to put domains live that we might develop in 3-4 months.
all people have to do is start posting domains, start making lists of the commonalities and start trouble shooting... or do that with your own networks. but of course, this biz is too backwards for that to happen
it could be that there are some common hardlink trades that are causing this... could be a lot of things. it simply requires a methodical approach to building a list of common factors and then determining which can/cannot be ruled out... and then looking at the remaining factors and testing.
you already have a strong lead... it seems to be affecting ST sites. so you've already narrowed it down from around 1.5 million domains to 1000's.Last edited by Pleasurepays; 06-20-2009, 09:33 AM.Comment

This non-sense about the back link to smart thumbs causing a problem is bullshit,
especially considering that smart thumbs still comes up #1 on the first page.

Holy shit! Smart thumbs is way down to 4th on the 1st page for "tgp script"
So if google thinks the back link is spam then why penalize the site/message board
that got spammed and not the domain being spammed?
The other option would be that smart thumbs is using an SEO method that google
has decided to penalize. Add in some spammy sites and that's enough.Last edited by sortie; 06-20-2009, 10:04 AM.

a site doesn't get penalized because of links pointing to it.You could be but you ain't!
