German translator! Although Germans speak, or understand dutch it's a different derivative of the language, which make it it's own. That's why I say German translator

Germany aka Deutschland, language is DE
Holland aka Netherlands, Language is NL

Omar, for you to say that Germans do understand Dutch is funny especially since you offer translations. Germans understand German, and other then that they pretty much refuse to understand anything else, with the exception of a few modern ones.

The other way around is more so the case, Dutch kids get at least 2 years of basic German language education in school. Also French and English are languages that a lot of Dutch kids get.

Can you show me a tour you translated into German?

I'm German and I don't speak or understand Dutch. You have about as much of a chance at understanding Dutch speaking English as you do speaking German. The language may have a similar sound to it, but they often use similar sounding words for things that are completely different so it fucks you up completely when you try to understand Dutch as a German without studying it first.

I think you're mixing up Germans and French with the refusing to understand anything else. A lot of French people get pissy if you go there without speaking French. The German school system requires English as a subject from 5th grade onwards. Then you pick a 2nd language in 7th grade and possibly a 3rd and 4th later on. This is if you take full advantage of what the school system has to offer, but at the very least you'll learn some English starting in 5th grade. There are three levels of post-elementary education, so you'll have to find the smarter ones of the bunch to find someone that'll be able to speak something other than English I guess.

This is probably because Dutch is less likely to be offered as a foreign language at schools around the world because it's less popular. Here's a list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...ative_speakers Dutch is pretty far down and German seems to be 4th on the list for languages in the 'Western World'. Spanish and French are still taught over German in English-speaking countries as far as I know though.

No offense Ktj4l, I grew up in a little town called Winterwijk about 3 miles from the German boarder. We have a huge market every wedenesday and saturday and I have to say that it attracts a lot of germans always, fresh fish market, farmers market with fresh fruit and vegetables etc. and I have never met one German who would speak Dutch or even understand Dutch when spoken to, personally I always thought they simply refused.
It also worked the other way around, for example a lot of the Dutch people went over the boarder to fil up their gas tanks or do other shopping. And unless you speak German they simply won't help you.
I am not saying this is the case with all of Germany though, so please don't take offense.

You are also correct on the French, then again they are known for this.

And it does make sense that german is higher up the list with their language, if I am correct germany is the area where the slavic language was born, a lot of other European languages are based of German. But with a population of 80+ million vs Hollands 15 million (of which 30% are foreign born Muslims) it makes sense that the German language is higher up the ladder..

We are better football players though... HAHAHAHAHA.. just kidding man

I wasn't really talking about Dutch. I don't know any German person who speaks Dutch to be honest. I thought you were talking in general. Most Germans will speak (or at least somewhat understand) 2-3 foreign languages if they finish the highest level of high school. Dutch isn't offered in school, so I can see them being stubborn and not picking it up even if they do live by the border. Those damn krauts! However, if you speak English, it's usually pretty easy to communicate and most people are willing unless you're in France. Haha.

I don't keep up with football/soccer, so you might very well be better at it right now. I prefer rugby, American football and basketball.

Wow I didn't know everything I said got so scrutinized around here. Ok let me REPHRASE that GERMANS DON"T SPEAK DUTCH, but the language IS A DERIVATIVE Just like Italian, and Spanish are derivatives of latin. If you noticed in my statement I above I also said it is it's OWN Language. I agree I could have worded that, better, and I did make the post before going to bed last night. As for tours my company has done. Your more than welcome to check them out
