imo, a ringlight creates a shadowless light and also adds contrast

i'd like to not have to adjust lighting as i move around shooting, will always be shadowless and strong contrast with the ring.

that's my goal anyway.

anyone here shoot with one?

Ya, if you look at some of Flashcash's new stuff you'll notice some of it was shot with a ring light. It has an awesome effect on a girls face and eyes.

For another example of proper use of a ring light, go see amateurallure.com

i've heard it practically kills the shadows.. that is also the effect i get when using a ringflash on my SLR.
but you have to figure out a way of getting your mic near the action.. do you use a remote mic set up?

Is that an LED ringlight?

I have a Kino ringlight for my vidcam to match my kino lighting system.

It works FANTASTIC. My use of it of course is for lighting up the shadowy parts (shooting from underneath for instance) The Kino ringlight has a dimmer on the ballast (which I have mounted on the cam) and I use a battery belt to power the whole thing.

I've found that I keep the dimmer almost all the way off. I keep it at the point that the ringlight is just barely on. And it just lights up the shadowy areas perfectly! If I crank the light up much past that it begins a washout.

Like most people shooting....I don't use the zoom on the cam at all and do everything via moving physically with the camera. So the ringlight isn't really being used or needed to be used when I'm standing 5 feet away. But when I go up close, for instance if it's reverse cowgirl anal...that ringlight is a real difference maker. So at the beginning of the shoot I adjust the dimmer to just barely turn it on...set it and forget it.

Worth every penny and puts an end to needing a "grip" on set to grab a big light and hold it an angle to light up those type of scenes lol

yes, LEDs, the wattage is not listed by litepanel, draw is 3.5 amps.

the light is infinitely adjustable via a rheostat with no color temp change. this one is a 3600 temp but with the gels i will adjust it closer to daylight + since i get a lot of daylight through the windows here.

yah. shooting a new micro-niche site that we have you on the short list to shoot actually. would love to shoot you for the site but waiting to contact you after we get a few things worked out, like getting this ring light dialed in! and to show the direction we are taking things, you'd be perfect though.

How do LED based lights go with filters? Don't they put out a fairly narrow wavelength?

I've never shot video with a ring light but I would imagine if you're moving it back and forth you'll get the deer in the headlights look... someone needs to invent a device that automatically dims the light level as you move closer.

That's why I was saying above that I keep mine dimmed as low as it will go before shutting off. No washed out look and it lights everything up perfectly. For myself...I got the 5500K kino ringlight to match my kino 5500k lighting rig. The whole system is fluorescent so it all fits together.

Before I got the ring light I used Light Panels LED system to achieve that same thing. Matter of fact I have that kit now just collecting dust. Very expensive little setup I bought it in late 2007 and actually used it as my only lighting on several shoots (when I was in Amsterdam for instance) while traveling.

If anyone is interested in buying my Light Panels kit let me know. It's 5500K, includes 2 of the lights both dimmable and two battery packs, chargers, international adapters, filters, hardware, etc. all in a nice briefcase sized case.

The amateurallure.com stuff looks really cool, now that I'm aware of the ringlight in their eyes its all I can see!

I think you're right, you need to just barely have it on, otherwise it dominates the shot. Good stuff!

I've never tried it. I'm very happy shooting with the ambient light of the kinos on stands and boom. I have 3 580EX flashes on stands and a wireless controller for all 3 that I was using as a mobile strobe replacement (worked great too), but haven't used that setup in a year because I like the way the ambient light of the kinos looks. I use a Canon EOS 5D for shooting stills by the way.

Cool rig, tho. I haven't tried something as exotic (yet).

Nice set up. I have a 20D and was thinking of shooting a little but would need a light set. Where I live im limited on what I can get without a LOT of hassle. I know of one shop that sells a ring and was wondering if they were worth it for stills.

Actually, ring light is a very unflattering clinical light that creates a super harsh shadow if it against a wall. It creates a shadow in all directions. You have to mix the light for it to be flattering with no shadows, technically you are just filling the light you as a shooter are taking away.

Wear a white t-shirt. Use auto iris unless you are locked off on tripod. You have to think as the light as a moving source. So when you come in the light should dim, otherwise it throws the other light ratios off. So if you dont change the power and you walk the camera in your sources the kinos, daylight or whatever you are using (not the ring light) becomes less of a source and more of a fill (which looks like crap unless that is what you are going for)

I use a ring light for still photography and love the effect. It does tend to flatten the image so keep that in mind as it will become harder to determine depth when the shadows are suppressed in such a way. For large solid shapes like people that's not really very important (more so when shooting objects or unusual shapes). Definitely do a practice run if you can afford it.
