it's a piece of shit anyway but it no longer updates virus definitions and i don't see AVG Free anymore on their site.

what's a good free anti-virus program?

I switched to AVG free this year from Avast. Still working for me with updates.

I think you can probably work out a few things yourself if you link some of the words you've used there together:

"free", "piece of shit", "no longer updates".

I use Bitdefender AV, it costs about $30 a year. It's a bit pathetic if you're not willing to spend that on looking after your own kit.

Oh, I also have a firewall on my router, have never had a single serious virus issue in 10 years.

My girlfriend uses AVG and it's pretty bad. I've been using Eset Smart Security in the office and I haven't had any problems in a while.

Still updates and works here. I don't use it alone though. I use other scanners along with it. Can't be too sure nowadays.

Forget free, if you want decent protection shell out some money. I recommend Kaspersky, best one in the game IMO!

Avast has that annoying yearly renewal policy. And the nag window would never go away for me even though I re-registered.

Avira, it's lightweight and it works. Someone suggested ClamWin, I haven't tried, but I'm going to check that one out.
