What server is required for........?
What kind of server would you need to host movie galleries...... about 17mbit average and peaks of 30mbit?
Running on Linux Say 175,000 uniques a day. |

... well, if you just burn bandwith and have no scripting stuff on it ... a 386 with 256MB RAM can do that, just make sure the disc is big enough and you have a 100Mbit networkcard installed ...

first i'd recommend FreeBSD over Linux any day for that kind of traffic.
but in any case, the hardware would be the same for both. if it's just hosting movies, a pII-500 w/ sufficiently sized SCSI drives and 1024MB of RAM will do it without breaking a sweat. more RAM would help you serve more movies simultaneously. make sure the motherboard you get supports more RAM if you think you'll grow significantly.

p2-400 half gig to 1 gig of ram 1 10,000 rpm scsi hard drive if all your doing is serving movies.

Our Standard issue machine is a
Dual Proc p4 or Athlon 2xxx w/ 2gig ram, scsi raid 5 36gb. The processing speed isnt really relevant, but we run an anti hotlinker system which needs alittle extra processing power. Whats really important are fast hard drives and ram. Additionally, alittle extra power is good incase you ever decide to use your server for something more than straight html. Might as well always be prepared.
