Porn star Stormy Daniels is trying to raise cash for a possible run against U.S. Sen. David Vitter.
Daniels, a 30-year-old Baton Rouge native, announced Thursday she is forming an exploratory committee “to gauge Louisianans’ support for my potential candidacy.”
She is accepting campaign contributions at http://www.teamstormy.com, which instructs supporters that they can contribute up to $2,400.
Exactly who is on her exploratory committee is unclear.
A filing with the Secretary of State’s Office for the “Stormy Daniels Senate Exploratory Committee” only lists one member, political consultant Brian Welsh, who was press secretary for Democratic gubernatorial contender Walter Boasso in 2007.
Daniels has not named a party affiliation.
Welsh, who is based in New Orleans, said more details will be announced soon.
He said Daniels is planning to visit Lafayette as well as west and north Louisiana as part of a listening tour.
Daniels made appearances in Baton Rouge and New Orleans earlier this month.
Daniels said in a statement she hopes to discuss “reforming the tax code to a system that rewards — rather than penalizes — success; protecting our children; and promoting personal responsibility as an alternative to government intrusion.”
Her possible candidacy is the result of an Internet-based “Draft Stormy” campaign that is largely the creation of a New Orleans college student.
Vitter, R-La., is up for re-election next year.
His seat is under scrutiny after his phone number was found on the client list of a woman who was eventually convicted for running a high-priced prostitution ring.
Like Daniels, he is raising money for his campaign.
He has not commented on the possibility of Daniels running against him.
