My last dog that I had lived to be 15 and the only shots he ever got were the ones he got when I first got him when he was 8 weeks old, he was not very social though and was rarely around other dogs. He never had any health problems, other than arthritis in his later years which is common among older dogs of his breed.
Though the dog I have now I keep up to date on all his shots etc. just because he is more of a social dog he gets out quite a bit and it's also a requirement of his insurance policy :)

Exactly. The only issue my dog ever had was Parvo and that was when she was a puppy and I only had her for maybe 5 days before the symptoms started. She got it from being in the pound. When I got her I thought the temp they listed on the check list they give you was a tad high, but they told me it wasn't high at all. So took her home. Turns out she already had parvo and was running a bit of a fever even when I first got her. She was on IV at the vet for 4 days. I was calling the next day and if she was still sick I was going to have them put her down. I think it cost me 150.00 per day and I wasn't making much money back then. Maybe 33k a year or so. This was back in 96 or 97. The morning I called to tell them to put her down they told me she was better and I could pick her up that night. So I was lucky to even have her live then.
So she is a bit of a miracle dog. On top of that. When I first went to the pound to look for a dog, they had an outside fenced in area that the dogs could go out to. When I pulled up in my car she came running out to the fence to see me. The only one that did that out of like 25 dogs that were in there at the time. Then I went in and I wanted her already at that point. She was exactly the kind of dog I wanted at the time. Well came to find out someone else had already filled out the paper work to adopt her.
They were supposed to pick her up the next day. So they told me I could fill out paper work too, and if she wasn't picked up in the next day or two I could have her. Sure enough the other family never showed up, and I got her. She has been my friend for 13 years now, and I hope I am lucky to have her another 2 to 7 years.
