... Sounds like a stupid thing to do :]. Maybe the idea was to block nortons outbound connections (when it contacts liveupdate etc). But seems much easier to stop that via the options in the program itself ;). Just dont use that hostfile, it seems very bloated. Better just to roll your own when you need it.

In Kazaa Lite 2.0.2 the install of that hostfile is disabled by default, just like it should be. Some ppl might find it usefull.. if you dont, just dont use it.

fnet 11-27-2002 05:19 PM

the version i'm running (1.7.2) says it blocks

# Adservers and other crappy sites:

including

...webferret.com
...crs.akamai.com
...sextracker.com
...grokster.com

afaik these are innocent bystanders

john smith 11-28-2002 07:01 AM

it's a standard ad blocking hosts file you can also find elsewhere on the net

Is this tro prevent people (or discourage them) from using kazaa to promote adult links or something?

Years ago I tried one of those internet speed up programs and had problems getting to microsoft.com.

I had the same problem with the hosts file - they actually put in (at the time) correct IP for microsoft (to presumably speed things up by not haviing to do dns lookups), but the IP had changed and it was going somewhere else.

Its to block kazaa ads

This Kazza anti ad thing is pretty lame in my opinion but think about who uses kazza ... The majory of people who use kazza are not going to buy porn memberships, the reason they have kazza is because they know they will be able to get most things they want for free. Reason I bring this up because some people seem to be getting pretty pissed off (rightly so) about this but I think you have to ask yourself how valuable a surfer using Kazza Lite 2.0 really is considering they are reloaders anyway.

I know its not the point but its just something i wanted to add

Just my :2 cents:

I find it surprizing that so many of you so called businessmen have kazza installed on your machine.

Lens, they block us. we're getting even in traditional 12clicks manner. :Graucho

Does this kind of thing touch on the Digital Millenium Copyright Act at all?

What are the legalities of manipulating access to hyperlinks?

e.g. gator

Actually, Kazaa has said that porn is traded a lot more than music, but I guess it doesn't make much difference.

I've never downloaded Kazaa or Kazaa "Lite". I never trusted either of them, especially the "Lite" version.

As always, too good to be true.

cash69 05-15-2003 06:28 AM

hey they can't block off any bodies site from the whole internet... that is fucked... if your domain get's blocked you could prolly sue.. they got like what.. 50 million users? that's 50 million less possible hits that you would of recieved.. that's big money

stocktrader23 05-15-2003 06:37 AM

They block it because some of the start pages I saw were advertising porn. Not 100% sure but I think AP was one there.

d0se 05-15-2003 06:49 AM

I have lite installed and theres a hosts file in its directory with all this crap, but my windows hosts file is just fine.....

odd!

Nysus 05-15-2003 06:50 AM

Wouldn't all these people being blocked want to take action against the makers? I doubt it lets people know that they won't be able to access an area of the internet.. These companies are surely loosing money.

Cheers,
Matt

cant you just edit the host file?

Yeah but in 2 years, every fucking surfer on this planet will use a peer to peer program.

I don't use any P2P since it's full of shit and for newbies. If you want to pirate warez and mp3, learn computers and stick to IRC/Newsgroup. Newbies should buy memberships :Graucho

the same hosts files that comes with the KazaaLite is becoming more common with other downloaded software.
It's part of the Tweak-XP program, which I have seen a lot of people using.
I've seen websites with just the host file and directions of where to put it as a simple adblocker technique.
Might be time for some domain shifting.

Connor 05-15-2003 09:44 AM

Yes, the solution here for Kazaa Lite users is to simply comment out the lines in the hosts file that are causing grief. Legal action probably won't accomplish anything... if Kazaa can't get this guy then an adult webmaster isn't going to make a dent. Kazaa Lite will also kill some features of the Yahoo website, so if you install it just comment out whichever lines block content you want.

Amateur Pages is being removed from the kazaa lite hosts file...

The point of the Kazaa lite hosts file is to block ads...

While it may not work perfectly...Thats how they have decided to do it...

Also...You will note...It DOES NOT install the hosts file by default unless you click in the install options for it...

Again...It DOES NOT automatically block ads like that unless you click a checkbox during the installation...
