Reading an article earlier.. this statement..
"... today's adult children will spend more years taking care of their aging parents than their parents took care of them. "

I haven't asked mine, but it got me thinking. Anyone else been put in the situation that they had to help support their own parents ?

Redbone, did it just happen ? Did you ever talk to them about their retirement and if they were saving or doing anything to prepare it beforehand ?

I thought that quote above in the article was pretty surprising.

Well, I knew they wouldn't be able to ever retire if I didn't pay for them. You might notice that I think about retirement a lot, and maybe it's because of this situation... I don't know. Luckily for them, things turned out the way they did. I never talked to them about it before I was able to do anything because I already knew the situation, so it didn't take me by surprise.

Anyway, I'm very happy I could help. Otherwise I'd be even more depressed than I am.

My wife and I have been taking care of my Dad in house for 2 years. Future plans are already being formed around this situation and we will be buying a large 6 bedroom house soon to ease the stress. This situation over the last 2 years has caused me to miss about 5 months of work due to unbelieveable back pain. Though I am much recovered it still affects my ability to work to my fullest comfortably. I have been dealing with his care on and off since I was 27. I am now 31 but sometimes I feel like I'm 50.

On another note the situation has also forced me to face my relationship (or lack of) with my Father and get 'some' closure there. I know I will never have any regrets about how I handled the situation and that is important to me personally...

I hope none of you are ever faced with this until you're ready but it amazing what you can deal with when you have no choice.

I have no problem supporting my parents. It's already budgeted in my future plans. How can you enjoy what you have if you don't provide for your parents? this shouldn't even be a question.

Now if you had some lowlife greedy muthafuckas for parents, that would be something different. But hell, I WANT to take care of my parents..

I paid off my parents condo so they could retire a little sooner. They have enough saved to live on comfortably so they don't need me to take care of them. I'd be honored to if they needed me too, though. Like Sleazy said, I owe them everything.
