    Lawncare: How Much You Paying

Grass is getting to ordinance level. So I had to throw up a CL ad.

My yard is not all that big. It has some shrubs that need a trim. Fenced in backyard.

How much do you pay your lawn folk?

I cut the lawn and pay someone in the sprint and fall a few bucks to trim up the hedges.

I'd bet he gets an hour or two worth of this shit out of the deal:

So far offers I have received are $25-50. Most averaging around 30-35.00 for what is a half hour's work. Maybe an hour with shrubs.

When I had a big yard (front and back with edging) I would pay $80 and they would bring four guys (yum) and be done in under an hour.

I give the guy $20 an hour. He usually comes a few times a month to help out.

When it snows though, he knows I'm good for a 1 am $10 for a quick shovel of the drive.

He's a really reliable crackhead. I might have to take him with me when we move to the country.

They don't have people you can pay to rake the stones?

Unless you totally hate doing stuff like that, I would just do it myself... save them money, get a little exercise, give you a little break from the computer screen.

Otherwise, find out if any of your neighbors are using a service. If so, call up the service and see if you can get a discount price since the crew or person will already be in your neighborhood... less gas and time wasted driving around. If none of your neighbors use a service, find out if one of them wants to hop over and take care of yours while they are doing theirs and kick over a couple dollars for the gas/trouble.

My mom likes cutting the grass for the exercise... I'm sure you have similar women in your neighborhood.

                        Allergies. Not a chance.

Good idea on neighbors. However, everyone seems to mow their own around here.

I pay $80 a month, the guy stops by weekly.

Funny story... When I first moved to California I bought the house myself without my wife, who was still in Arizona. We had two houses for a while. I set up the landscaping. Well, every month my wife got a bill from a landscaper and paid it. She never noticed we had two houses, two landscapers, and two bills - but was only paying one of them. Turns out the new landscaping company was purchased by a larger company about the time I signed up with them, and I got put on their route list but not their fucking billing. Suddenly two years later they want $3k.

I ended up paying him in full.

Last month he sent me a bill for $100 - for interest on the late fees. I told him to fuck off.

I put a pool in the backyard so my yard isn't large anymore. I mow it myself and it's really only the very little exercise I get during the week. I do hire Scott's to come and fertilize the yard and honestly once they started my grass never looked so good.

Barefootsies, when my wife was running her company for landscaping/lawn care it was about 30-50 per standard residential lot per week. Lower pricing for a strict mow and go, higher rates included lots of trimming, leaf care, etc.

Also do not get upset to find out your paying the company 40 bucks and they get you done in 10 minutes. They spend a lot on better tools such as wider mowers and such. Plus they usually will operate in well coordinated crews so that even a full acre job takes less then an hour even with tons of detail work.

Just a big tip. Do not always just go cheap. Many people will use illegals etc and that is one thing. Yet many more are operating their business on the sly and do not spend for things like proper disposal or worse yet insurance - so guess what when one of them or someone else gets hurt while they are working on your place. So knowing enough about workers compensation as well as the required insurance (tree cutting not included) if the price is not above 25.00 per service be suspicious, unless you know they have several other people on same block (not a few streets away cause that requires loading up and unloading) and you happen to have a tiny lot.

$30 every 2 weeks to have the lawn mowed and the clippings taken away. That's a bargain if you ask me and I don't have to do it.

I pay $100/month and they do a great job. I hate mowing.

i pretty much live in a skyscraper and all i know is our yearly dues which isn't much at all... there is some lawn in the park but surely it doesn't take but a few minutes a week for the army of laborers to knock it out.

I mow and take care of my own. I actually enjoy doing it though. Get's me off the computer and outside for a an hour or so a week.

Good points. My mom pays $250 a month and they do the mowing and trimming. My mine would nt be a good example. For the condo 28 units we pay $1200 a month and they do a good job.

Then also some sort of shrubbery trimmer. Plus hand tools for the basic yard care. Tool costs plus maintenance on them and fuel plus time is rarely worth it for the average person who is lucky to get 2 days off a week to be home. I know for a fact that many people just do not want to give up that 30 minutes to a couple hours each week to do the yard when they could be spending their days off doing ANYTHING else. Now if you work from home, then well I can see it - again unless your time is worth more and you do not enjoy doing it.

At times there is hardly anything worse than it being 110 degrees plus outside. Having to mow and edge the yard. Trim the bushes. Rake up all the leaves under the bushes. Blow the side walks and drive way. Then spray for weeds. Each requiring equipment swaps and almost all of them hot heavy equipment. Of course when your done cleaning all your tools. Now given the choice between that and paying some people 35 bucks, well they could of got more.

First off doubt you dude is carrying proper insurance at those rates. Keep that in mind and perhaps ask to see his proof of insurance. Unless you like the risk of course.

Shrubs may need to be pruned a couple times a year, to weekly depending on the type of shrub, your zone, and watering habits. Roses pretty much need a good whacking twice a year plus deadheading each week while in bloom. Which should stay in bloom a good chunk of year if they were properly trimmed at end of fall / start of spring, and of course fertilized and fed properly.

Also curious about the fertilizing. Do you have a very small yard? I ask because a typical 1/4 acre lot can take up 15-30 bucks of fertilizer per spreading - not including any special plant fertilizers etc. Just strictly grass fertilizer/weed killer combo (assuming your OK with the use if such chemicals).

I pay 225 a month for weekly visits, but that includes the mowing, trimming a ton of shrubs, hedges, huge flowering plants that run all the way up to the top of the garage and back down, fertilizing and seeding, taking care of the irrigation system (and being on call when something shits the bed - I've had to replace four different irrigation valves in the past year and they always seem to go on a weekend), taking care of all the landscaping behind the pool - and when I ask them nicely, cutting down the asshole neighbor's pampas grass that keeps growing into my yard. I used to pay an illegal $175 a month, but he was paying less and less attention to everything by the month. I figure it would cost me a lot more than $55 a week in lost revenue if I took time off from work to do it all myself - we have a ton of shit to do for such a small lot lol.
