"The state pays for the car’s insurance, inspection, excise tax, title, registration, repairs and a AAA membership for one year at a total cost of roughly $6,000 per car.
The program, which started in 2006, distributes cars donated by non-profit charities such as Good News Garage, a Lutheran charity, which also does the repair work on the car and bills the state.
Kehoe defended the program, saying the state breaks even by cutting welfare payments to the family - about $6,000 a year."

If it means people who want to wotk now have a way to and from work thus removing them from sitting at home and doing nothing but collecting welfare, then I'm for it.

I'm with you on both counts. I used to live near a lady who didn't work and had either 7 or 8 kids (two sets of twins, I think, didn't want to sit and count them), and if more places had better public transportation the unemployed wouldn't have to get a free car handed to them to get them back in the job market, just a $30 bus pass.

If people are comfortable in their poverty they are more likely to stay poor. :2cents:

Do you have any idea how much that woman was pulling in per month??? With 7 or 8 kids she was doing about 3 to 4k or more.

Why would she work.

She can let them run around half naked and wearing clothes from Good will and she can sit back, watch her bigscreen tv ( that rolls easily into a closet in case the spectors show up) have digital cable and drink beer all day.

And you and I pay for it.

Sounds to me like a yearly bus pass would be much cheaper. I guess that depends on where you live; In some places they don't have much for public transportation.

It would still come out the same savings wise if not worse with bus passes.

State pays 6k, state also deducts 6k from benefits. Thus cost to state = nadda beyond admin.

With a bus pass the state pays what 540 or so a year. Yet how such programs work a bus pass is not an asset and thus does not count towards benefits. Thus cost to state = 540 or so per year plus admin.

Plus they need to show that they not only have a job or could get a job if they had transportation. They also need to show that public transportation would not work, plus have a clean driving record.

My main issue is that it is only available to families with children. So again another slight F U to those who do not have kids.
