I've heard that the first web based SE was webcrawler. I have no idea if that's right or not, but I can remember using it in around 93-94. I'm sure there were SE's long before that, though.

i don't remember wwworm, but I remember using webcrawler way back when.... it sucked I thought at the time.... but I was on a really slow dialup too....

Not sure which was first, but of the early ones, I really liked Lycos. They hold the patent on the spider, I believe. I remember before they spun off from whatever University it was... CMU?
