This is pretty much bullshit - as someone who has lived on several of the Hawaiian Islands for years at a time I can assure you - there is no crime problem. Unless you park a rental car full of cameras in a bad part of Oahu - also there are great and amazing people in Hawaii as well as some bad apples, like any state.
