Are you kidding me? he is arrested for DENYING THE HOLOCAUST?

he is a citizen of my state, its amazing at the length they will go to make you accept their way of thinking.

I do not agrewe with David Duke or the KKK, however, i do not think people should be imprisoned for not beliving something.

Don't go to another country and break their laws even if you don't agree with them and expect to walk away.

I don't agree with thought police at all but I do understand why countries that were directly involved with the holocaust came to have similar laws.

youve been out of America too long, you have forgotten what freedom of thought it. You are either against this, or you support it. No middle ground when you arrest and take away a persons freedom over personal beliefs.

I think they are old laws though. They were created as drastic radical laws to change the public opinion... I think we had a similar thing in the United States with a few different laws that we have. As time goes on and things "normalize", those laws need to be taken off the books... not that I agree with the implementation from the start but can understand how that fear can create such laws.

                      Allow me: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_of_thought

To deny a person's freedom of thought is to deny what can be considered one's most basic freedom; to think for one's self.

No one in this thread is wrong or right, I said she forgot what FREEDOM OF THOUGHT is.

He did not commit a crime, he commited a thought crime.

They are 'old' but they are still enforced and really in historical terms the holocaust was not that long ago and some of those that were the reason they were created are still alive. Germany has a similar law that was put there to fight against the remains of the Nazis. Again, I don't agree with jailing somebody for a thought or even expressing pretty horrid ideas. I just get how they came to be on the books. I am sure that over time they may very well be removed but I am also sure that people like Duke know when they go to a country like this they know that law is enforced. Almost like poking a dog with a stick.

In addition, your example is skewed, how about we change it to fit a thought crime pattern?

How about this, you THINk about drinking alcohol in Saudi Arabia then you get arrested. Its okay to think about beer in America, think about it in Saudia Arabia, and bam arrested for THOUGHT CRIME?

He didnt consume alcohol, or smuggle alcohol in. He just THOUGHT about it.

Okay so then we need to find out if he was arrested simply because he was there and had particular opinions or if he was arrested because he was there to promote a book that supported particular opinions. If he was just there saying hello... then sure, not a fair comparison. If he was there promoting a book, that's a fair comparison.

I was not defending the law only saying that you can't go to somebody else's country and break their laws and expect to be immune because it isn't the law in your home country.

I also wasn't saying I agree with that law but that I historically understand why it came to be on that *particular* countries books.

Heck, I even support the right for the guys in the masques in London to spew their hatred because I agree with freedom of thought and expression. You just can't think that you are protected from the laws of another country when you visit it. Ask the American kid in Singapore all those years ago that got his ass beaten.

They wanted to hang Thomas Paine too, and ever since reading the Paine story, I have chosen to always fight for the book writers, no matter the subject matter.

Hate him all you want, the moment you support locking people up for books, you are a nazi yourself.

I think it no coincidence, Thomas Paine was convicted of libel against the crown for http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rights_of_Man

Perhaps many need to reread Paine's great works.,

How about this, you THINk about drinking alcohol in Saudi Arabia then you get arrested. Its okay to think about beer in America, think about it in Saudia Arabia, and bam arrested for THOUGHT CRIME?

He didnt consume alcohol, or smuggle alcohol in. He just THOUGHT about it.
Most jurisdictions require an ACT (paired with a mental component--INTENT) to judicially find criminal guilt. Act + Intent. In your scenario, the intent is there but no act, so no crime. This pairing of elements is key in a criminal case because the PUNISHMENT varies. First Degree murder, for example, has a different intent factor than manslaughter although both crimes involve the same act.

If he was just there saying hello... then sure, not a fair comparison. If he was there promoting a book, that's a fair comparison.
Right..if he entered the country and was arrested because he once wrote something in a book then that is clearly wrong no matter what. If he was promoting that book in the country or made any sort of public statement about his belief then he should have known that would get him in trouble. It doesn't matter if I agree with the law (again I don't at all) but I don't think some governments would care if I didn't agree with their requirements to cover my face either. I would still get the punishment.

The story indicates that he was arrested over statements in his book.

A police spokesman says the book includes a denial of the Holocaust.

In this case, there's an ACT (a book) to go along with the THOUGHT so the criminal case goes forward. They are not banning the THOUGHT exclusively. There has to be an ACT

Duke went there at the invitation of neo-Nazis to promote the Czech translation of a book he wrote.
I won't even claim to know Czech law but as holocaust denial is illegal there and the book includes the denial then would that book be illegal? If so, he is there to promote an illegal book.

Probably invited by the neo-Nazis to stick a finger up to their government and their government answered.

If he was promoting that book in the country or made any sort of public statement about his belief then he should have known that would get him in trouble. It doesn't matter if I agree with the law (again I don't at all) but I don't think some governments would care if I didn't agree with their requirements to cover my face either. I would still get the punishment.

If you are arrested because once somewhere in your life you sold porn but never in that country then that is a different matter.

The constitution is about as useful as toilet paper in another country. 2. When you get an invitation to a liberal country and your politics are considered racist you're being set up.

Clearly that law you would have described is very extreme but then so are some of the actual laws governing women in some countries. Saying that you can't expect to break a countries laws and not get in trouble in that country is not the same as saying those laws are right.
