There was heavy foreboding atmosphere throughout the movie. A feeling of inevitability.

Watch it again. Only this time, imagine the whole movie is about Tommy Lee Jones and the other people are just supporting actors and not the central focus of the story.

I loved it, but can see why it wasn't for everyone. It's not a traditional movie and is far more intelligent than it appears on the surface.
