Question for the people that live with crappy water (wells)

Visiting my house in Indiana, well water. There is a ton of rust in this liquid. Have to use filters to drink it.

Problem is this. I noticed the toilet was running and did not want to overfill the septic tank so I attempted to jiggle the handle to make the flapper seat. Did not seem to help. So I pulled the lid off the tank and the float assembly and everything else in there is covered with rust, which was preventing the float from rising.

There must be something I can add between the water softener unit and the feed. I am a total n00b when it comes to this stuff. Any suggestions?

Water softener salt pellets with rust inhibitor is the cheapest way, if you want to spend some money you can have a nice water system put in

iron in the water is difficult and you need to get a specific specific filter system just to deal with it and they are not perfect

They use those but it doesn't seem to help much. I think a water system is a must or water isn't going to be able to make it through the pipes within the next year.

The really annoying thing is if you leave the rust your toilette bowl is going to get nasty ,extremely difficult to remove, rust stains.

It'll also fuck up anything your water drips on like sinks, bathtubs, etc..

Get an iron/sulpher filter system. We had the same problem, and the system got rid of the problem completely. Around $1500.

I grew up with well water. Every four or five years we had to have our well dug deeper or something like that.

Imagine my surprise when I moved out of my parent's house and discovered that most people have to pay for their water..... Opps.

Digging wells is not really free either unless your able to do it yourself. Your often just paying upfront for the water or hopes of it. Hell around here a new well is about 15k if everything goes perfect. Water bill is 80.00 (rounded up). So assuming there is no need to drill deeper etc, still looking at needing to wait in that house 15 plus years to break even.

I grew up with well water too. It tasted so much better than this processed bleach water with all the minerals removed. The only cost was the electricity to run the pump and a new pressure switch every couple of years for a few bucks. Never saw rust but we don't have hard water around here.

Im in Indiana aswell, my parents have well water and shit gets dirty after a while. Its just something you accept. You just have to clean things more often then normal and if the flapper isnt working, go buy a new one. That iron out shit aint too bad either.
