Israel admits killing British UN worker

The Israeli army has acknowledged that its troops shot a British UN worker who died during an Israeli raid on a Palestinian refugee camp in the West Bank on Friday.

An army statement said preliminary investigations indicated that two soldiers identified a man in a UN compound "holding an object that looked like a pistol" and opened fire at him.

Iain Hook, 53, an employee of the UN Relief and Works Agency (Unwra) in the Jenin refugee camp died before reaching hospital in an incident that drew criticism from UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.

The army said shooting was coming from the compound when the soldiers opened fire, although there is no independent confirmation of this.

Unwra says it will carry out its own investigation into the shooting.

Bear in mind this happens only days after a bus full of israeli schoolkids was blown up and an ambush killed many israeli soldiers..

Its shit when someone innocent gets caught in the crossfire but anyone that chooses to go to work in such a place at such a time knows full well the risks.

I seem to remember the US blowing up an apc full of british soldiers during gulf war 1.. and thats from a plane with plenty of time to see the target, very little to worry about and advanced communications.. sometimes shit just happens..

I amazes me the messages posted here by folks who are sitting comfortably in front of their screens, - never ever had any experience of war, or been on a battelfield in their lives and parrotting expressions and opionions that are clearly direct quotes of their own governments "opinion" for palitable comsumption or variations on them.

The amount of hatred and utter bigotry against other nations and peoples, whether "deserved" or not, is an indication of the mental level ability/education of those posting.

You are safe in front of that screen to spout beliefs and opinions.

War is devastating to many - flippant comments like "nuke em" are not worthy of any man who actually is a person of credibility. This expression appears to originate in some warped US culture from folks who have been isolated from the real world too long and living in some "US Disneyland".

Both sides on many conflicts have done "evil" things - there are no clean hands and rarely is there anything for a nation to proclaim some "proudness" or "achievement".
