Banned Movies

Anyone seen any of these classic banned "video nasties" from the 80's. I have seen a few but from what I remember they should have been banned for being bad films in general, not for the content.

The DPP list of 'video nasties' was first made public in June 1983. The list was modified monthly as prosecutions failed or were dropped. In total 74 separate films appeared on the list at one time or another. Thirty-nine films were successfully prosecuted under the Obscene Publications Act but some of these films have been subsequently cut and then approved for release by the BBFC. The remaining 35 were either not prosecuted or had unsuccessful prosecutions.
A number of films spent a short time on this list because their prosecutions failed shortly after publication or because it was decided that prosecution was not worth pursuing. Ultimately, the list became obsolete when the Video Recordings Act came into force, and since 2001, several of the films have been released uncut. In the majority of cases below where cuts were made, they were scenes of animal cruelty and/or excessive violence to women, both of which are still regarded with some degree of severity by the BBFC.

I've actually seen most of those, and the blood in gore in most of them is so cheesy you have to wonder how they ever got people outraged. Faces of Death I can remember as a kid thinking how unbelievably cool and outrageous it was, but as I got a little older I was actually mad at myself for believing it was real. A few of them have rape scenes that might make people uncomfortable, but for the most part they are pretty tame compared to what we watch today...

Funnily enough, I remember watching almost all of the "Faces of Death" movies in college on an Easter weekend with all the east coast kids stranded at Ball State for the short holiday break. "Passion of the Christ" would've fit right in.

I just remember as an American getting confused by the British term "Video Nasty" when it was used in the "Young Ones" episode I Youtubed above. I kept thinking they were talking about porn as it seemed crazy that it would be so taboo to see a horror movie.

tbh, i never watched those flicks again.. and i paid top dollar for them (originals, first releases) - could aswell sell 'em to the highest bidder - i won't miss 'em.

then again, i ENJOY those fictional movies like braindead (dead/alive) or bad taste, where there's so much (film-)gore you just can't stop laughing - it's so hilarious. =)

Dead-Alive is great. Peter Jackson sure did direct some great movies before, Lord of the Rings.

Exactly! IMO, "the frighteners" was jackson's last good movie - luckily i own the uncut version of that one (yes there is one), plus the lenticular movie poster.. dammit, this movie-talk makes me all itchy and stuff, i'm a call my local dealer tomorrow ;)
