I was resistant to using Twitter, too since the whole concept of it seems absurd, until I heard a podcast w/ Michael Branvold from Gamelink, where he strongly recommended using it, so I figured it I should give it a shot.

I guess it may be good for business, but I feel like it's like calling a random, wrong number on your cell and telling them what you are doing. Seems kind of weird. Why would people care that you are going to the market, having dinner with family or give a shit on what you are doing at that moment?

For those who believe that twitter is simply a passing fad for those who dabble in trivial matters, you're only looking at one side of the coin.

Imagine being able to instantly alert anyone on your twitter list about a new product, service or update.

The ability to embed pics and urls has more potential than most dare to realize. Of course, you have to build a following first...

Personally, I just started using tweetdeck on one of my PC's - a twitter client.

It stays logged in and alerts me to both Facebook status and Tweets instantly and I can tweet and/or update my facebook status with a few clicks.

Then, on top of that there are twitter clients for phones such as Twittelator Lite for the Iphone/Ipod touch and Twitterberry for the blackberry. With SMS messaging built into the Twitter system, it's not bad even if you have a regular cellphone.

Besides, the trend doesn't show signs of slowing or stopping. I remember twitter from back in '06 when it was a merely side project and was known as Twttr and Odeo was the primary project (I was into podcasting at the time).

I should have signed up then. I would be a lot further along.

I hear ya... but weren't we doing the whole "you've got mail" thing about 10 years ago..... it just seems silly to me that it has to be dumbed down and cut down to 100 characters or whatever to be palatable to the masses, it will grow to the point where everyone is ignoring all the twits anyways because of volume and pointlessness I think

That's the weird part that I haven't figured out as yet. It doesn't quite work the way you would think.

I watch how younger generations interact and does appear that things are being "dumbed" down and truncated.

What these generations have grown up doing, however, is taking in and manipulating large amounts of seemingly trivial information relatively quickly. That is a unique skill that they have developed.

The upside is that when they find something that they are interested in (amongst the overload of info pushed into their faces), they will push it back out to each other exponentially until the saturation point has been reached and then they move on to the next target.

I compare it to the "Oooh....Aaah" phenomenon when people are watching fireworks. Their attention span to a certain thing only holds until the next burst of whatever else comes next...unless the initial thing has multiple sections that can hold their attention.

Businesses will simply have to adapt to this scattered way of customers choosing what is interesting to them.
