Damned dog ate a huge rock - $1000

Sigh, more surgery for dogs. This is getting expensive.

eek! My dog likes to toss rocks and catch them in her teeth. I'm anxiously waiting because I know I'll see the day she cracks a tooth and it will be a big vet bill bleh!

Wow... I know all about surgeries and dogs adding up. Our lab has had three surgeries now in the past 8 months for stage 2 cancer. After the local vet doing the first two, we took him to the Colorado State Animal Clinic and they did a $1300 surgery on him and everything has came back clean so far. He had his leg fill with blood/fluid and getting that drained since then has added almost another $300 so far. Damn near pry 5k in these months on everything but it's all worth it.

Hope your recovery is ok! By the way, do you have pics of your rots? My wife would love to see.

I know it adds up, but my 2 cats are like children to me, and my dog is my best (non human) friend in this world. They are all a part of my family.

Every penny i've spent on them has been worth it.

That's one of my biggest fears with my dog. He likes to pick up everything in
his mouth when we're out for a walk and I'm constantly pulling stuff out.

I hope everything goes well with yours.

I've paid 2k+ vet bills. Shit happens.

Last year my dog ate a family pack of pork that was left on the counter....Packaging and all. Vomited up the meat but not the package

Off we rushed to the vet for x-rays and shit. X-rays showed nothing but as they prepared to cut into him just to be sure I received a phone call. The packaging was found in the living room under the couch.

Still cost me around $400 if I remember correctly.

Sorry Aaron but I laughed my ass off at the last part of that! I had a similair scare with my dog. We found crumbs from a big bag of potato chips one day and no trace of the packaging, off to the vet, almost got there when my brother calls and says he found the packet half buried in the garden... the little shit was trying to hide the evidence that he stole my chips hahaha

EDIT: not the $400 cost, the fact the packaging was found

We like to joke that our pets have better coverage that I do.

Pet Insurance is the best thing ever for pet owners. And this is exactly the reason to have it.

The ASPCA Insurance offerings for pure breed dogs covers the entire list of AKC breeds.

The company we deal insures a few of our hedgehogs, and will insure pretty much any small exotic animal.

I believe the will even insure working dogs.

They're all rescued dogs without papers. Further, they have a variety of existing medical conditions that make them uninsurable.

$956 after emergency surgery, which she came through fine. Rock was huge and jagged, stuck just before passing to the small intestine.

Pet Insurance. I haven't needed it yet, but my Lab plays hard. It's only a matter of time before he wrecks himself.

Would you rather spend $5,000 over several years, or $2500 in one minute?

Glad to hear your dog is ok warchild.

Mine chewed up a full raw roast beef two days ago, it was on the counter while I was waiting for the oven to heat up, ended up cooking what was left for her, and then I had to wonder what to eat for myself.

What can you do, they just look at you as if to say what do you expect.

I will have to watch her with the rocks she loves to play with them.

I am lucky. Quality vet visit here is about 30$ and even when we had to have the Birds Beak rebuilt from Bondo it cost us 100$ actually 1000 pesos so about 89$

Unfortunately this morning she is crashing. She has either developed paratenditis (fluid in the belly) because the incission is leaking, or the trauma of the surgery has over whelmed her.

If they can get her back under, and there's a very strong chance she's not strong enough and will die during the attempt, they are going to do another surgery and flush her belly plus look for any legions. The prognosis at this point is not very good however.

Well they managed to get the super surgeon in and he used a special anaesthetic that did not put her completely out. I believe it was a combination of morphine, a local anaesthetic and a local block. She came through the surgery, got her insides flushed out for bacteria and the stomach incision over sewn to make a tighter seal.

Her heart rate has come down from 190 beats a minute to 160 but she is still in danger of cardiac arrest due to the strain her entire cardiac system is under. She will remain in critical care and hopefully we'll see further improvement over the next few hours. She is by no means out of the woods but it's a few small steps in the right direction.

I appreciate the good intentions, however reading the thread would have saved you posting. Even at over $2500 now, the cost is not my concern.
