help! computer constantly reboots (win2000)
So i was uninstalling norton as I had recently installed avast. As I had norton antivirus 2003 I had to use nortons removal tool. I uninstalled norton, restarted. Everything seemed ok except it has also removed my norton firewall. So i was reinstalling that when in the middle of the install my computer restarted by itself and has been doing so every since.
I have no idea what did this. Though I'm sure it had something to do with uninstalling norton or using their removal tool. I've tried a couple things, started in safe mode and ran spybot, found nothing. Tried using the recovery panel to do chkdsk /r and fixboot but it still restarts afterwards. I'm assuming its a software issues since it doesn't restart when I go into safe mode...Does anyone have any suggestions or have ran into this problem themselves in the past? The OS is windows 2000 service pack 4.

windows 2000? was that before windows ME? I'm sure others might be able to help you but you are talking about a operating system that is over 10 years old, maybe it's time for a new pc

Oh i know. windows 2000 is pretty good though. I've never had any problems with it. I have several computers. One with xp and another with vista but i still use the windows 2000 pc quite often.

Maybe try to start it in safe mode and then take out all the Norton stuff.

Probably this is a hardware problem. Check the overheating of the processor and check to see if the cooler is working properly. Here in Brazil we use the "heat cream" to reduce the processor temperature. Good luck and sorry my bad english! ;-)

I really doubt its a hardware problem as the probably happened immediately after running the norton removal tool and beginning to reinstall the firewall. I tried using the last known good config but it still restarts. I am wondering if perhaps there are corrupted registry files, would that cause it? I've heard of the norton removal tool doing this.

well i went into safe mode and went through the registry and deleted any instance of norton and deleted some folders that norton left behind and now its not rebooting over and over again anymore. Hopefully there won't be any other issues.

I have a similar problem on a friends laptop. The only thing they claim to have done recently was install an adobe acrobat update.
I haven't dug in yet, but I"m hoping a system restore will clean it up. |
